177. "The study of an academic discipline alters the way we perceive the world. After studying the discipline, we see the same world as before, but with different eyes."

Had a tough time to come up with good points. Suggestions are most welcome..

The institution of academics forms an imperative aspect in the life of an individual, since academics serve not only to inform the man about the various sciences that he wishes to profess in, but also to enlarge the latitude of his thought. Hence an educated person has a matured perspective of the world that once seemed strange and fantastic.

The primary purpose of academics is to educate man to identify good from the bad. A naive adoscelent presumes that cigars and drugs make a man look 'cool' and authoritative. In the past, several surveys in the United States of America have revealed that young kids considered the Marlboro Man to be their icon and would go to the limits to imitate him. Awareness of the disastrous consequences of such insalubrious practices, greatly contributed through the reformed educational systems, have brought about marked changes of the attitudes of the younger generation. More adolescents have been disciplined and trained to adhere to the path of righteousness.

Academic practices usually incorporate social and cultural sciences along with the usual physical sciences. These play an important role in educating the students about their customs, social norms and cultural background. Although argued that these factors contribute little to the advancements in scientific and technological studies, these form a crucial aspect of an individual. The social being that man is, these ideals provide him a sense of security, brotherhood and identity among like minded people, irrespective of his scientific and economic disposition. Superstitious beliefs are taught to be mere farce and must be curbed to promote truthfulness and practicality in our practices in daily life.

Academics have become indispensible in today's fast paced world. Without a rigid educational foundation, man becomes vulnerable and incompetent amidst the exponential growth in the scientific and technological arenas. For instance, a man less informed in Computer Sciences views the Internet as a bane, hampering privacy and promoting child trafficking and pornography. However, a stock market professional or a Computer Science graduate student would admit that the world without the Internet is incomprehensible considering the vastness of its resources and the speed and accuracy of its communicational characteristics.

The purpose of an academic system is to educate man about the various factors influencing the lifestyle of humankind, alongside its duty to aid man in achieving his goals and aims in life. An educated individual is more mature, pragmatic and prudent is his approach to life. Though subtely, the educational methods change the perspective of the man that he considers of this world. There lies the influence of academics in the lives of humankind.

I think that the topic does not necessarily want to know the difference in educated or uneducated's perspective in general but demands to know the difference in outlook of a tyro compared to savant in a specifed field like history or science.

With the rapid development of technology and accumulation of knowledge, human being has drastically changed their view to the outer world, together with the way to perceive the world. Although these changes do exist, the world remains the same as it were. The only difference is that we use the different eyes to the world we lived and various ways to utilize the world to meet our demands.

On the one hand, natural science has changed our eyes and deeds to the outer world. With the development of natural science and accumulation of our knowledge, we have learned a lot about the basic principles behind the superficial world and, furthermore, utilize them to serve for us. In front of some natural catastrophes, such as flood, hurricane, volcanic eruption and earthquake, our ancestors are frightened and afraid of them, so they attributed them to a punishment to them from some deities. Nowadays, people has learned more about the emergence and form of these phenomenon, which can be proved from not only can we, to some degree, forecast some catastrophes and alleviate the harmful degree, but also we are trying to use some of them to serve for us. For example, we use flood to electricity, volcanic soil to agriculture. In fact, with the development of nature science, we have changed our views to see the nature; from superficial and awestricken one to profound, positive one and make all we can to rebuild the world to our hope.

On the other hand, with the enlargement of academic research¡¯s scope, new eyes appear. We are not satisfied the wealth of nature world, and extend our research to some spiritual and non touched fields. Art, philosophy and politics emerging as the time going, these fields might has little to do with the extern, for their effects are indirect, but they are important in their function to enrich our inner mind. Also, our interests are enlarged to some unknown and untouched fields. For example, some microcosmic fields, such as atom and DNA, and some macrocosmic world, such as astronomy and black hole are in our consideration. We are not resting on the normal world we lived and stretch our hands to some mysterious and interesting fields.

However, the world¡¯s nature is, to a large extent, unchanged as it were, that is to say that the world is still the same as thousands of years ago. Frankly speaking, although the power and potential of human beings are immeasurable, some basic principles and undeniable natural power are out of our grasp, and all we can do is to discover the principles and utilize them other than try to change them which is vain. For example, the laws of motives are exists before Newton discovered, and thousands years past, they also act with their own way without any change. And the work of us-human beings, are try to utilize the laws to produce some mobiles and machines.

To sum up, it is the advantages of human being¡¯s power and intelligence that we can shape and utilize the outer world according to our hope, but we must esteem the basic principle and underlying mechanism. To the latter, all we can do is to discover and make good and adaptive use other than try to change them.

I entirely agree the issue. After knowing the academic discipline, we know some secrecies of nature who is the closest and farthest friend. We learn to observe the world with a different sight.

Most of physical discipline is related with the natural phenomenon. Our far ancestors saws the lighting, the falling star or a rainbow, they feared or admired the god which shows such a unblievable strengh. But now, we can explain most of nature miracles with physical discipline. The rainbow comes from millions of little drops floting in the air, reflecting the nature light; the lighting in the sky is the some thing of our manmade electricity which makes bulb lighting; the falling star is not the sign from the god but a stone or a similar small earth flying in the universe. Understanding these phenomenon, now we can look up the sky with a feeling of appreciation but fear.

The knowledge of society and history gives us deeper understanding about ourselves. In ancesent century, the god is highest govener, his power is unlimited; in Rome empire time, the autocratic emperor is the human god, what he said is the law, what he did is absolutely correct, the definition of liberty does not exsitent at all; nowadays, the spirit of freedom and democracy has widely spreaed on the earth, democratic governments engage in protecting the human rights and interests of public people, citizens votes for whatever he like and deny whatever he does not agree, that means the government is for the people, by the people and of the people. The leader is not a human god again, he just a honest servant serve for people.

Furthermore, the more academic discipline we come to know, the more objective we see ourselves. When human were still huntting a wildlife for a meal, animals are our enemys; when we had some fowl, they are a part of our family as the property, we are the ruler; taday, all of us realize all species on the earth are equal and precious and unvaluable, we depend on each other, we are all freinds. Human being is not the No 1, not the ruler of nature, we are a part of nature the same as other biology. Those idea's changes comes from the power of science and academic discipline.

Academic discipline teaches us not only some rules of those happening in nature, but also a new way we see the world. It changes the way we see, we think, we understand, which makes us be more objective and more rational.

Issue177 The study of an academic discipline alters the way we perceive the world. After studying the discipline, we see the same world as before, but with different eyes.

------------

I totally agree with the speaker that academic disciplines alter the way we understand the world around-- physical and social world. To retrospect the process of learning could help us come to appreciate this significant change.

The process of learning, generally speaking, is from the basic level to the advanced; from concrete to abstract; and from fragmental to systematic. Consider changes we made from experience to knowledge. Experience, which I mean direct observation, provides us immediate perception of physical facts and phenomenon. It is through experience we come to get primary information about truths. For instance, we easily figure out that mud is solid, water is fluid, and the air is gaseous- basic states of matters. Admittedly, experience is a way we see the world, but when we progress into interpretation of experience, the acquisition of knowledge happens, which reflects deeper comprehension towards matters as they exist. Talking about states of matters mentioned above, it is in our chemistry discipline, we were guided to make clear that the physical existence of almost all substances could have three forms- solid, fluid and gas; and further, we generalized that under certain conditions, transformation from one state to another could take place. This is a leap of our perception toward the physical world, where difference happen, from basic information to intellectual cognition.

If we move further in academic realm, changes continue. And in most cases, these changes manifest greater values. Through academic discipline, knowledge we have gained transfers into theory, which reflects a higher level of cognition and reveal the general laws in the fields it fits, and thus has potential application. Think about the example of chemistry discipline once more. Water can be changed into ice, and carbon dioxide could be transformed from gas to solid. Yet, these relatively solitude knowledge seems to have limited values until we relate them, interpret them, and finally come to a general law¡ªphysical state have changed, but the real substance remained. Subsequently, a fundamental theory in Chemistry is figured out, that is, without chemistry reaction, there is no substantial change in matters and this kind of change is called "physical change". Now, we have experienced again an elevation in our comprehension towards the nature of matters. Put it this way, education facilitate our understanding from superficial to substantial.

The process of changing could similarly be extended to social science study. A student major in psychology is more likely to acquire useful information from people's words and behaviors as to make judgment of one's personality or something relevant. Also, a student earnestly pursuing cultural research no longer see our customs and traditions as they actually are, but get down to quest the cultural distinctiveness or analyze underlying reasons that how we embrace this cultural identity. Again, a student interested in history tends to explain certain social events with historical perspectives and reasonably makes a vision about the future. In a word, learning is a process in which we change in our awareness, in perspectives and ultimately in our values system.

Conclusively, an educated person should be the one with enriched mind and distinct perspectives, which significantly distinguish him or her from an innocent child he or she used to be.

Good vocabulary

Had you spent 45 minutes for this essay preparing?

Actually I think your paragraphs are too big and you may fulfill your introductory and conclusion part by some sentences from the others paragraphs

Also check this:

1 paragraph:

I haven’t found retrospect as verb, it is a noun. So I would have written

The process of learning in retrospect can help us to evaluate this significant change.

I think “come” was unnecessary and I’m not sure about using “appreciate” here.

3 paragraph:

I would have put “Generally speaking” to the start of the sentence, as it seems to me it makes essay easier to read. Insert “studying” as there was no sense without it.

Generally speaking, the process of learning is studying from the basic level to the advanced.

“Consider changes we made from experience to knowledge.”is too informal

“phenomenon” is it plural?

“where difference happen” happens

good luck
