:shy: THANKS A LOT!

Univ should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study.

No one can deny the fact that a person’s education is the most important aspect of his or her life, the majority of people believe that education is a lifetime study. Students need to learn the scientific method from University for defining and solving problems. Education can attempt to give a firm foundation for the achievement of personal fulfillment. The better the foundation is built, the more successful the student will be. On the other hand, education is also crucial for the development of the society. Since the beginning of the human civilization, all cultures have put heavy emphasize on education. Any government, which is blind to this point, may pay heavy price. Some people believe it is beneficial for students to attend fewer courses and focus on their major study, while others speak high that every student should spend more time on study different fields which may help them become all-round talented persons. Actually, success of both the sides is necessary to make optimum progress. However, I am more in favor of the latter one because in today’s technologically advanced society, it is impossible for those who focus their attention on the concerning fields to satisfy the needs for the future society.

It is obvious that the development of modern society requires people with interdisciplinary and comprehensive knowledge. Cross-disciplinary is a related but distinct term meaning the use of knowledge from one discipline to better understand another, recent study shows that the research of the movement regulations of physics can greatly enhance dancer’s dance skills. By figure out some fundamental functions of physics, the dancer can better understand the mode of action they need to perform during the show. A well-trained engineer must understand fields as diverse as physics, economics, geology, and sociology, thus, an overly narrow engineering curriculum should be avoided. Actually, there are already many universities such as the faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of British Columbia has been supporting interdisciplinary research and teaching since it was established in 1949. Almost all of the 82 current faculty members in the college are jointly or cross-appointed between a research unit within the College and at least one other research unit, department or faculty.

Students who take a variety of different courses can broaden their knowledge and make a solid foundation for their future concentrated study. Take the field of Business Management for instance; the students have to acquire knowledge in writing, accounting, economics and human resource management before he can successfully start his major concentration study. One need not to study the other course profoundly, but it is always helpful in life to know about the primary stuff. Also, variety of courses gives students a chance to be friends with more people from plentiful of fields and thus better for their knowledge about the world in different aspects. Students can be more adaptable in their future career if they choose a variety of subjects during their university study.

As a popular saying goes, “everything has two sides” People must have known that the depth of a certain subject is infinite while both the student’s energy and time are limited. Only when a student just specializes in one subject, can he or she focus on it. Thus it ensures the students more likely to be a kind of expert in some subject when they are given the degrees. Those who often change their studies will never succeed in the long run; therefore, in order to be successful we need devotion.

From what we discussed above, it is basically beneficial for students to spend more extra time studying many fields of disciplines despite the fact that it may cause problems and has disadvantages for the focus of students. Every decision, no matter how perfect it seems to be, has pros and cons. What we people should do to maxims the advantages is to find the exact balance point between them. Therefore I reinforce my standpoint to believe that students should participate in different courses as long as they have time and energy.
