The true test of the greatness of a work of art is its ability to be understood by the masses

Art can be comprised of literature, poetry, paintings, music, poetry so on and so forth. All of these forms can be used to send messages, morals and values to the bourgeois and effectively aiding the upliftment of human race.

People often develop a taste towards all or some of the forms of art mentioned as a diversion or avocation from their tedious and arduous daily routine. They resort to these forms of art as a hobby, interest or for mere calming and relaxation of mind. Hence, people are far too often disinclined to put serious stress on the mind to deduce complicated, convoluted forms of art. They tend to just have a glance at it and ignore it if it is not easily perceptible.

As it is said, to bring simplicity in anything requires much efforts to be put in but making issues complex, convoluted and tortuous is very easy. The limpidness and easy perception of art appeal to the aesthetic sense of the people and help the amateur to develop a taste in all forms of art and hence help in widening the gamut of his interest and knowledge.

For example, if a literary piece giving a discourse starts with complicated and tortuous writings using obscure references, the reader is required to do research and have some knowledge beforehand so that he can comprehend the essence of the literature and to apply the morals effectively in his life. This might often kill the interest of the masses and most like be a cause for the masses to develop skepticism and aversion.

Despite all the above stated facts, any form of art that tries to convey profound knowledge is bound to be complex. Experts in the fields would suggest that amateurs and neophytes should begin with the basics and then gradually build their gamut of knowledge about the field. If this procedure is followed, not only does the common man pursues his hobby effectively but also learns something new every time he delves further into any form of art.

As in the field of carnatic music, to understand the different ragas it is mandatory for a person to know the basic elements of the music. Without the knowledge that the art demands from a neophyte, it is impossible for him to understand the greatness of the art form.

Hence, I agree partially with the author that simplicity would greatly increase the interest of people in art and help in the correct comprehension of the messages and morals. But once the common masses start comprehending the art in its true essence and acquire profound knowledge, nothing remains obscure or esoteric.
