Claim: We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from those whose views contradict our own.

Reason: Disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.

Do we really learn from people who share common views? This is the equivalent in saying that the world would have looked much nicer had everything were of the same color. But we don’t. We like the rainbow that spreads its colorful wings. The very fact that flowers, leaves, animals, and even landscapes and water bodies display diverse color palettes, is an indication of contrast. Every flower, leaf or animal has their distinct color, which gives them their identity and makes them unique. With remarkable similarity, people exhibit distinct nature and views that makes each of us unique, and people only learn from others when there is a disparity between them. Just like potential difference is necessary for a circuit to work, or a difference of heights is necessary for water to flow, difference in nature of persons is necessary for ideas to flow. Perhaps this is what is known as individuality.

Individuality is born of free thinking. In the case where people or individuals holds high esteem for their own thoughts, they also regard other people’s thought irrespective of qualifications or caliber. Such people also takes into account other people’s views and treat them as a part of their free thinking process. Claiming that such free thinking is an arduous rather than a creative task, implies the limitations of the innate thinking ability of the person. Such persons limit the growth of his mind and adversely affects his surroundings. Leaders like Adolf Hitler, an acclaimed dictator with notions severely limited within bounds of his own thinking, has been found to be swept out from history.

In the modern world, it is evident that several leaders hailing from different backgrounds have been able to rise to the peak, only after admitting and practicing free thinking. Not many multinational corporations in the world are governed or run by a single leader. There exists managerial hierarchy in every corporation. International organizations like the United Nations, who have taken on their shoulders an arduous task, i.e. to prevent a third world war, was formed by a collaboration of many countries. In all these aforementioned places, ideas travel in all directions and conflicts do occur. But that is the essence of it all, it is the fuel that runs the system.

Therefore, people should try and conquer their internal emotions and ego, and then empower themselves with the mighty weapon of free and innovative thinking, that is bound to transform the world. In this “21st Century”, where the word itself factors into technological prowess, rapid advancement and most important of all, democracy, it leaves only slim margin of success for the inept minds.
