I'm posting this essay here as a courtesy:

In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
------------------------------
In contemporary society, information gained from every source possible is worth perceiving and insightful. Whether importance given to the television should be weighed more or should it be given to the books depends on the usage for receiving the information. Each has its own place and importance in the contemporary life. Lets look into the issue, which states that television and reading books are mutually exclusive.

Books and television have both carved their importance in the society over a period of time. Books are helpful in many different ways. To support my view, lets consider libraries. Libraries are not only used to store archives of books, but also wide ranges of categories of books are available. Starting from baroque to contemporary information could be retrieved from library. People get very much benefited with libraries, as they get to learn and gain lot of knowledge. On the other hand, people looking for specific information, may not find television helpful. They would choose books it would give more specific details than television can.

Another example that can be considered to support my view is, when it comes to kids, people tend to choose books over television. Books help the kids to think positively and develop a positive personality. For example, moral stories teach kids how to be benevolent. Mythological stories teach how to be courageous and fight with evildoers. Some might argue that children programs on the televisions are doing a wonderful job in teaching kids. Disadvantages with the television could be that kids might tired by watching television for hours. They may not even like thinking or remember anything from the program, which may hinder their learning process.

However, television has its own place in the society. It has become a basic need for contemporary life. For instance, it is helpful to watch daily weather in severe and harsh winters. Moreover, it gives variety of information on daily news, home and gardening, and home décor.

These days, television is also connected with Internet, which basically provides a box, which serves ‘all-in-one’ purpose. Even though, daily news and weather can be found in everyday newspapers, people may choose television over newspapers, as it is easily accessible in the busy mornings. Therefore, it not only serves as a need but also, as an entertainer. After work, people tend to switch on television than sticking to the books, as it gives the daily information that was missed during work. Moreover, it works as a relaxation to relieve people out of stress.

On the whole, I concur to the point that, importance should be given to television or reading books depends on the information needed and usage of that information. Both are equally weighed in this contemporary society as they have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Writing is the most difficult task for me.....Please comment on what I have tried.....

"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

Television has become part and parcel of diurnal life of a common man. By actually viewing the things on television, one can easy grasp the subject. But it cannot curtail the import of books as they are the treasury of knowledge and cannot be substituted by other media.

Television with its audio and video aspect can contribute to learning process much more than reading the lines from book and making those pictures in mind. One can learn more faster when an experiment from physics or biology is shown on television than reading it from book. But the question is, how many channels are educational. Except discovery and few other educational channels, all of the channels are merely for entertainment and news, which increases the cognizance regarding society and current happenings around the world.

One can find books on gamut of subjects, giving more choices for the person to explore. Whenever a person wishes to probe an issue he can get the related books and study the issue in detail, which is not the case with television as it is possible that the required issue is not covered in any of the channels at that time. For profound study of a subject, book is the most effective way, as television can only give a general idea of a subject. Much knowledge is embedded in books written by great writers further every religion has its own bible. One can learn many things by reading these books. Books are more convenient because of its portablity and can be read at one's own leisure.

Finally, tv is no doubt an effective means of communication, entertainment and education but books also have their significance in increasing the knowledge of people.

Your essay's only 285 words. I think a GRE essay should be between 400 and 600 words.

Overall your essay is pretty good. You have introduced some good notions, but you have failed to dwelve into them in depth. I suggest that you elaborate your points more, and present relevant examples.

Score: 3.0/6.0
Justification: A good but basic essay, lacks enough depth to warrant a higher score.

u plzzzzzzzzzzz rate my essay also and it is my first time
--------------------------------------------------------------------
"In the age of TV, reading books is not as important as it once was.People can learn as much by watching TV as they can by reading books"

Present is not as worst as fast.today everyone can afford to buy TV. Nowadays TV has become a necessary thing for everyone. So having TV at home is not a big problem then.
Today we get not only a single channel but so many channels where we can know about and learn about animals, arts, geography, world wide news, sports, history and so on.

And we can explain a issue more better by showing a picture as well as we can learn more better by seeing a picture. everyone can't afford to go and watch some historical places distrubuted whole world wide.So if we can see them on TV it is just equal to watch them by our bare eyes.So we'll feel as if we are standing infront of that and watching it.
I believe that by reading a book sure we get the knowledge. But by watching TV we get a knowledge in a well presented manner.
Take an example of Panam canal:if we read from book about this sure we get to know about the construction and all but if we watch TV we get to know about that in a realistic way.So the saying "One picture is worth 1000 words", suits here. And take an example of sports:we can watch matches and games sitting at a home.we feel as if we are sitting in the stadium and watching the matches and games.

To read books you have to be a literated person, but to watch TV you don't have to be a literated person.Without that also you can understand the things and can gain knowledge about them .

So By watching TV we get more knowledge in easier or better way and we can feel the things in a very realistic manner.

Hi all!
I just wrote my first GRE essay. Please, grade it. Thank you in advance

The issue of a watching television can replace reading books in process of learning is very controversial. On one hand people read books since ancient time and have being used them for learning also. On the other hand TV is becoming more and more widespread and often using in learning. But I believe that book cannot be replaced by watching television and reading books will stay long time the best way for getting knowledge.

First of all, I want to repeat that books are used for education since ancient time. It means that people have the tremendous experience for writing books, particularly the study books. The books give to reader opportunity work with information in convenient to him/her speed since you can read slowly the difficult for understanding places or stop and reread them as much as you need. Also reader can write own comments on the fields of pages and select important quotes in text. You do not need anything else for reading book except itself. Furthermore, you can read book anywhere: at home, on a beach and on yours way to college or job. Besides reading of books improves knowledge of language on which book was written, even this language is native language of reader, it causes work imagination of reader more intensive than when he/she is watching TV.

However, modern television has big possibility be sued more and more in education. TV can show almost any process visually, which sometime very difficult for describing in book. Moreover visual side, watching TV gives possibility be inside of a picture, affords to spectator to heard sounds that can be very important for learning.

Getting back to comparison reading books and watching television I want reflect most important by my opinion advantages of book such as availability, perfectly completed collection of books in libraries, common improving of development of readers during reading

In conclusion, I want to say that book will be dominated in education of humans in future also and we need to develop our education TV programs not as replacement, but as the excellent addition to book for giving the people more complete knowledge and make understanding complicate things much easier.

The topic is :=
"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

Here is my essay:-

Almost ninety percent of the world population owns a television set. This is in marked contrast to the situation a century ago when a radio set was the only means of broadcasting information. Biologically, it has been proved that moving images are highly capable of grabbing and holding the attention of most mammals, especially humans. A dog can only see moving objects. By citing this example, one can barely imagine how powerful moving images are, when used as tools for education and entertainment. A few pioneering entrepreneurs decided to combine the commercial and educational potential of television. Thus National Geographic and Discovery Channel were born. At the same time, a few questions have been raised regarding the efficacy of other mediums of learning. Books have been our source of knowledge since time immemorial. It would be dubious to assume that television would usurp books as the primary means of learning.

Too much television usage has several ill-effects which could undermine any hopes of it replacing books. It is apparent, that if books are ever replaced, one would have to use a television for more than six hours everyday. A television set uses electron guns which hurl charged particles at a phosphor screen. The only thing protecting the user from these high speed electrons is the thin phosphor screen. Over a period of time, the user may suffer from myopia and retinal damage. One may argue that LCD televisions have no ill-effects on humans. But, such screens are too expensive to be practical. Thus, cost and retinal damage are major limiting factors. Plus, it would not be possible to provide televised learning to people free of cost. For instance, if a television channel intends to teach history to children, they would have to hire competent people. To meet these expenses, the televison channel will be tempted to air advertisements. Soon, the advertisement time will exceed the learning time. Also, for the same amount of money spent on television, one can buy several books.

The ability of television to show several channels can prove to be its bane. Sometimes, learning can get very boring even if it is done on television. As time increases, the boredom increases and the user is bound to become restless. In such a situation, the user will be tempted to switch to other television channels. For instance, after a long boring lesson on civics, the user would change the channel and watch MTV. Thus, time which would have been utilised for learning is being used for MTV. As compared to this, books contain information only on the subject matter. Hence, though the ability to show several channels is quite an acheievement, it can prove baneful while examining the feasibilty of television as a medium of instruction.

There are a number of supporting arguments available to uphold the superiority of books. Firstly, books do not cause harm to health after prolonged use. When books are used under the assistance of a teacher, they are much more interactive than television. For instance, when a student studying physics has a doubt, either the assistance of the teacher can be utilized or another book can be referred. In fact, whenever televisions have been used as a means of learning, it is books that have been used as refernce material for further study. Television can be harmful for children due to broadcast of unsuitable material. It is known that inspite of parental locks, children end up accessing unwholesome material on television channels. As compared to this, a book on physics, will not contain advertisements for adult underwear. Furthermore, television has been around for only one century. Books have been around for more than thirty centuries. This is more than enough to prove their efficacy. Also, imagine what would have happened if the ancient Egyptian Pharoahs would have used television instead of hieroglyphics and manuscripts. With so many reasons going for it, it is apparent that the humble book is the best means of learning.

Yet, one should not turn a blind eye to the advantages of television. As mentioned before, the bigest advantage of television is its ability to show moving images. This can greatly help engineering students. For instance, a television screen can show how the various parts of an internal combustion engine move and interact. This is simply impossible with books. Also, the internet is a huge source of information for learning. It would be impossible to browse the internet if the computer screen were replaced by a book. A computer screen or monitor is an advanced television set. Furthermore, the advantages of television, books and the internet have been combined into one entity-the e-book. Though, at an infantile stage, the possblities of the e-book are boundless. Hence, television has merits which must not be ignored.

Television usage must never be unlimited. The ill-effects can range from myopa to retinal damage. The several channels shown on television can be a distraction. Without books, it would be impossible to continue education. Yet, there are aseveral channels where television clearly the better choice for learning. For better learning, it is important to make optimum use of television as well as books without depending excessively on either of them

38. "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

TV has gained much popularity around the world since it was introduced. The fact that people are wealthier implies that TV becomes more and more affordable to the mass public. As a result, TV is used as a medium of learning throughout the world. Books, the traditional means of learning, by contrast, have declined it sales since the birth of TV. There has been debate weather we can learn as much by watching TV as they can read books. My answer is no.

TV can enhance learning, no doubt about that. The fact that TV is livelier and interactive means that it can capture audience's attention better. National Geographic can vividly portray the natural animal world, telling the audience how the animals survive in the face of their predators. Carl Sagan's cosmos tells us the wonders of universe which grandeur can only be mesmerised in the form of motion pictures. Usually students can learn better by watching something rather than reading it, and they can remember it better, too. This makes TV a popular education tool, since nowadays students are less likely to pick up books then before. So TV becomes a way to obtain information and in some sense, books are less important than before.

However book's role is simply irreplaceable. In science subjects, one has to master certain concepts, which are expressible only in forms of words or equations. How can you express, say, principles of natural selection, More's law, quantum mechanical principles in terms of pictorial form? The aid of visualizing is of no use since these concepts cannot be condensed and translate into animated figures. This is particularly obvious in mathematics. The only way to learn maths is by doing it. This means that one has to open a math book, study the concepts and examples, and then applying what he/she has learnt by practicing it. TV can't help in this case, since there is no way to gain deep understanding by watching others doing math. Similarly in physics or chemistry, one has to know how to apply what he has learnt to solve real life examples. How do we do it? We can't sit in front of TV and wait for the professor to tell us what to do! We have to read up textbook, digested it thoroughly and use it to solve problems. Books are better tool than TV in this case.

Likewise, in arts and humanities subjects, book's role is equally indispensable. Subjects like philosophy takes a great level of mental understanding which books alone can provide. In historical subject TV cannot adequately play the role of books. This is because history is not satisfied with the description of events only. The job of historians, and the duty of history students, is to gain an understanding of certain particular events. We have to understand why Jews are always the scapegoats, why the sanction imposed on Germany before World War 2 is one of the contributing factors of World War 2 etc. I can watch a 10 hours commentary on Roman Empire, and gain a lot from it. Reading Gibbon's "The Rise and Fall Roman Empire" will also do, but it comes with extra bonus. The book offers us trenchant analysis and invaluable insight which cannot be televised, it can tells us what's the cause of the fall of roman empire, why roman empire cannot be overrun by barbarian and so on. This is what TV cannot do.

To sum up, TV can play a good role in passing on knowledge, but books are still needed. The invention of words as a means to communicate has hasten our civilization development, human learned that the best way to spread knowledge is through books. This fact is unlikely to change, as we are still adept to learning deep stuffs by reading books or notes, not by watching TV.
