Topic: “A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college.”

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.

Answer:

It may be advantageous to have a common national curriculum, for all of the students until they enter the college, in the way that it is easy for the government to handle the educational system. But, it is too extreme to say that each and every student in the nation should follow the same curriculum.

If it is followed, you go to any corner of a nation you will find the same taste all around. The educational system should be diversified. Some subjects like mathematics, social studies should be studied as a common curriculum by all the students of a nation. In India, the national language being Hindi, it is fine if we have a common national curriculum for Hindi. But, we cannot have a common curriculum for regional languages like telugu as there is no point in studying another regional language. If we have a common curriculum without regional languages, it is not good for the cultural aspects of that region.

It is not good for a nation in terms of technology and education to have all its students study the same curriculum. India has common curriculum for its students known as CBSE. But, it is optional for the students of all the states. If any one takes it he/she will be following a common national curriculum. As there are no regional languages being included in the CBSE curriculum, it is highly unlikely that a CBSE studenthas a good insight on his native language which accounts for his curtural values. And there is also a wide spread criticism that CBSE students do not do well in mathematics. If a CBSE student joins college in a math major, suppose in another nation, he will have to struggle.

If we look at it from the other side, not having a common curriculum, has its own disadvantages. Who can decide on what subjects to include in the regional curriculum? Who can predict on which major a particular student is going to take? There are many more unanswered questions if we are to follow a region wise curriculum.

It is not always good to have a common curriculum for a nation as it has its own drawbacks. Having a common one mainly taxes on the cultural values of some regions as it is highly impossible to include subjects that showcase the cultural values of all the regions. Being more practical, teaching some common important subjects to all the students would prove to be advantageous in the long run. That said, having a common national curriculum or an isolated region wise curriculum, considered separately, will prove to be disadvantageous. So, it is good to make some important subjects compulsory for all the students of the nation and give importance to regional subjects also.
