Scandals are useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

In asserting the usefulness of scandals in addressing problems and issues in the way that no speaker or reformer can do, the author separate the functionality of these two while in fact what scandals and speakers and reformers do complement each other and this is directing the society toward reform and perfection.

Scandals have been a part of almost every filed and a wide range of them can be found in different societies. scandals serve many positive functions, they warn people and make them well aware of conspicuous wrong doings in their societies. for example defalcation scandals which are quite prevalent specially in developing countries would increase the vigilance of people about the extent of corruption in their country. however some times scandals are around less important issues and they really don’t deserve lots of attention from the citizens. In essence too much concentration on them would have counterproductive effects. the scandals about love affair of the politicians is a good example in this regard. Although infidelity and unfaithfulness is not an accepted behavior at all but too much attention to it-a natural consequence of a scandal- would overwhelm people to the extent that they start to lose their fairness and they become critical of every single behavior or policy of that person.

Also most of the time scandals would disrupt peace and bring about tension and feeling of insecurity and malcontent in people. for instance when people become aware that the most important car manufactures in their country has not comply to the safety standards and as a result of technical fault the cars produced by this company are subject to explosion, they become agitated and nervous. But all these feeling would provide any efficient solution to the problem? In situation of this kind if public outrage is not controlled it would lead to chaos and confusion in the society.

At this point a reformer or a prudent speaker can control the situation and unite people in an efficient way and this would bring about a positive change. Many revolution in the world which were result of public dissatisfaction from corrupted authorities and governors were started by wide range of scandals and then a rational an prudent leader in form of a reformer or speaker took lead of dissatisfied public . for example in the Iran’s revolution there had always been talks and scandals about the corrupted king and his family who took the natural resources and wealth of the nation and didn’t committed to democracy. Only when a reformer arouse from the nation all dissatisfaction and discontent were united and a successful revolution took place.

To sum up depending on the kind of scandal it can be detrimental or beneficial. But even if the scandals are beneficial they only can be an indicator of a kind of wrongdoing in a society but the real action toward it and finding a solution is in the hand of some one who unite people and guide them into the right direction.
