Tounderstand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study itsmajor cities.

Write aresponse in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree withthe statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. Indeveloping and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which thestatement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerationsshape your position.

Should we really study the majorcities to get a clear picture about the characteristics of society? Nevertheless, many people may agree that cities are the ideal population for studies butcities may actually misrepresent the whole society, if the cities are notrepresentative of the whole country. In my view cities are not the epitome of asociety, thus the countryside must also be studied.

New York is one of the most famouscities in the whole world. In New York majority of the people are fromdifferent countries or other states of USA. People of New York speak severallanguages. Whereas, the other cities ofUSA for example, New Mexico state does not have such diverse population. Thus, ifwe conduct a study to know the ethnicity of the peoples or the language spokenby the people of New York and New Mexico State; the results will significantlyvary between the two cities. Thus study conducted only in the cities mayprovide ambiguous results.

Consider the example of Bangladesh.Bangladesh has two major cities. The most happening city is Dhaka. If we studythe cultural aspects of Bangladesh and we only select the people from Dhaka. The findings of the study will be biased, because in cities majority of thepeople prefer classical or pop music and dancing styles but different districtsof Bangladesh have their own genre of songs and dancing style. Even theaborigines of Bangladesh differ completely in their cultural practices (songs, dialects and dancing styles). Therefore, the findings will be misleading if westudy the cities only.

On the other hand if we conduct a studyon life style and rate of education of South Africans in Cape Town it would bevery convenient to collect data because majority of renowned institutions arelocated there and myriads of studies have confirmed that the most talented groupsare attracted to cities. Therefore, we can easily collect the data becauseeducated people are aware of the benefits of research. But the people of the ruralareas of South Africa may not be educated and the attrition rate ofparticipants may be high due to ignorance and studies would not berepresentative. Moreover, there is stark difference between the life styles andeducation rates in the cities and that of rural areas thus such studies willnever represent characteristics of an entire society of a country.

After considering the evidencesfrom the examples of New York, Dhaka and Cape Town we can conclude thatfindings about the characteristics of a society only from cities may be evasive. It will just provide us biased information, thus studies must be representativeof the entire population.
