Hi my name is Nagalakshmi. I have posted essay for topic 108, I am waiting for the response. I am posting essay for the topic 112. If I am doing anything wrong in posting my topic for it to be analysed pl, let me know. I really need responses on my topics. I am going to write GRE in December.

112 Some educational systems emphasize the development of students' capacity for reasoning and logical thinking

I believe in both the ideas of the author that the educational system should emphasize on students capacity for reasoning, logical thinking and also a student must be able to explore his or her own emotions.

Issac Newton, who is the greatest scientist of all times, invented “acceleration due to gravity” by simply observing a falling apple from a tree. Then he thought about it and explored his thought. In this case, he combined his reasoning logical thinking with his exploring of his emotions. Thomas Alva Edison might not have invented phone or electricity if he had not put his reasoning into research.

I believe exploring one's own ideas will not be successful if they are explored without reasoning and logical thinking. They must work together if some beneficial outcome has to come out of it. so any Educational system should concentrate on both the ideas to be successful.

I would like to give my personal experience about exploring our own emotions. I am generally hesitant of putting my emotions into actions. I recently learned driving. I luckily passed the road test and got my licence. One week I drove with my husband. After that I got the courage to go on my own. That day I drove sometime and parked the car. I was taking the car out of a parking lot, I reversed the car a little bit, one car was comming behind me, so I hurried and my car went over the curb. Though nothing bad happened, at that time a little reasoning of waiting sometime for the other car to pass me might have helped.

So even if it is inventing something huge or doing something in everyday life, combining our emotions with reasoning and logical thinking
really helps. So educational systems should practice on this. After all, today's students are tomorrow's explorers.

Thomas Alva Edison might not have invented phone or electricity if he had not put his reasoning into research.

This paragraph seem to be a re-iteration of the above paragraph and only recounting the same idea....Might as well exclude this para

Though nothing bad happened, at that time a little reasoning of waiting sometime for the other car to pass me might have helped. Hmm, well I am not too sure if this example makes a lot of sense here for this topic...It is more like a general tendency of any new driver to act in haste like u did....I guess its misplaced in this essay

So even if it is inventing something huge or doing something in everyday life, combining our emotions with reasoning and logical thinking

Nagalakshmi, those r just my opinions and IMHO this is not the best of thy work....I liked the other essay that I critiqued better than this one. There's a lot of room for improvement. U need to brainstorm more to have better content. Also, structure need improvement. May be AmigoRo can help u here....Ro, can u give thy feedback as well on this one????
    Thanks -Sri

    ---------------------
Education should enable students to carry on their life effectively. As long as this is the goal of education, and as long as the goal is not to produce heartless automaton or the over sentimental weaklings, the education should enable students to think logically as well as to explore their own emotions.

Firstly, the ability to reason and think logically is very important in life. Consider a student that applies for employment in a big company. To be selected, the student will have to prove that he is better than others. If interviewer asks, “Why should we take you and not the others?” then his success in getting the job will be determined by how well he was taught to reason. Similarly, think of a student who has just come out of the college and wants to open a software firm. If he were taught to think logically he would identify the potential market, the costs of establishing the firm, the sources of expertise, potential competition and so on. Only after such careful considerations would he decide whether or not to open a company. However, if he were not taught to think logically, he would probably wind up opening the firm without making any consideration and face severe problem on the very first day of the opening.

But the ability to reason and think logically is not enough, to carry on the life effectively one has to be able to explore ones own emotion. For example, say, our student of the first example is proficient in reasoning but mediocre in exploring emotions, understanding oneself. He might end up getting a job of a programmer when he were actually fit for the job of press reporter. This mismatch in the nature and the job might well ruin his happiness. Moreover, coming to the second example, the student, if strong in logical thinking but weak in understanding oneself, might well perform the cost benefit analysis and start the business but later realize that the stress exerted by the life of an executive is beyond his endurance. In this case also the student will suffer.

Thus, it is easy to see that either logical thinking or ability to explore ones emotions by itself cannot lead to success in life; success and happiness require both of them. As the education’s goal is to impart the ability to be lead a successful and happy life to the students, education should emphasize both.
