"Creating an appealing image has become more important in contemporary society than is the reality or truth behind that image."

In contemporary society, appealing way of presenting images has created its own space. The overall appreciation of the image increases if it is presented in an appealing manner. Lets evaluate the presented issue by comparing to everyday, real life events.

Many people in the society understand the fact that appealing image would help them in everything they pursue. They take advantage of the fact and try to implement in their lives. For instance, lets consider a person who works in software department, which develops software products for their clients. Person is supposed to have expertise in the software field to work efficiently for the company. Even, if he does not know how manage the programming part for the software product, he can still survive good in the company, if he knows how to handle clients with their issues. The reality about the person is he does not have good knowledge about anything that is related to his work, but he manages to survive in his company with the appealing image, which creates overall good impression about his work. Hence, even if the truth is hidden behind the appealing image, it works very well in the contemporary society.

Another example that can be considered to support my view is, Ex-president Bill Clinton's sex scandal. Initially he thought he could get way with the scandal having an appealing image as president of the country, but in reality he was responsible for the scandal. In the end, he was caught, as the evidences were out. Therefore, having an appealing image does help in the contemporary society to get away hiding their weaknesses.

Some might argue that if the image is presented without the appealing manner, people would very well accept it. For example, lets consider a person who works as vice president of the major company in a city. He may not know anything about the ground work that necessary to increase his company revenues, as long as his subordinates does the work for him. But, if he presents himself with the reality before his clients, he may not survive in that as the vice-president. His appealing mannerisms help to enjoy a position like vice president. Hence, a society gets easily influenced by the images, which are appealing.

In sum, I concur that to the fact that creating an appealing image in the contemporary society is very important.

Here's my take on it...

Creating an appealing image has become more important in

contemporary society than the reality or truth behind that

image.

We as members of society live and abide by the

norms of our culture. this involves giving and gaining

respect. an appealing image of a personality means that a

person draws respect of his/her contemporaries, colleagues

, superiors or subordinates. the person's company is

enjoyed and is treated as a symbol of 'mingling in' for

others around the person. this image is also interpreted as

his social standing. This image lifts a person's self

esteem. it draws form this that the person is liked because

of some qualities that he / she has. these qualities can be

broadly catagorised in three different shades.

first is the image that a person creates with his own

abilities and personality. this is the kind of image that

depends on how the person deals with others, how the person

talks, what he talks about, what his opinions are, how

these opinions are shaped. this leads to the overall

ability of a person to walk into a crowd and grasp

attention. he may use humor, he may use general knowledge,

or take advantage of the groups likes and dislikes. the

second kind of the appealing image has more to do with what

the person establishes for himself as a professional. this,

in the context of living in society, has more of bearing

than the former type. here the depth of a person's appeal

to others is measured by his professional ability. he draws

more respect and is more appealing if he knows his job. a

point to note here is that he may not be liked while still

being appealing, but as pointed out earlier, this type of

definition centers on profession. it is the depth of

professional knowledge and the ability to apply it on

ground that makes a person more appealing.

Another kind of appeal that a person inherets is from

power. A person in an elevated position, a high rank,

serving at an important place, or an affluent person all

carry an implicit appeal. this appeal is not attributable

to the person himself, but to the position that he/she

enjoys. It is a dark but a very true side of human nature

that we are usually drawn into awe of authority.

this brings us to a sharp comparison between two kinds of

appealing personalities. it also brings out the questions

that is it really more important for a professional to be

pleasing in order to be accepted by our contemmporary

society? is the pleasing person (who may otherwise be of

shallow knowledge and little use to society as an active

member of it) more important to society? how long would he

last? would our society discover him over a period of time?

what will his standing be then?

We take a very controversial example of country XYZ's

polititions. The masses of the country know for a fact that

the polititions are corrupt. Government after government

the country's wealth has been plundered. year after year

the same faces appear on the political front. year after

year the same people fail. But instead of being thrown out,

they are vested with power again. it follows from this that

while in power, they use their position to coerse people to

elect them again... or else... This is a clear example of

appealling image veasted with power. here the line of

reasoning stands very valid that in contemporary society

the appealing image is more important than the meat inside

it.

on the other hand the doctor who knows his profession may

not enjoy a lot of power, but does have a lot of appeal in

our society. his profession is important for us and his

mannerism has little to do with his place in society. In

case he conceals his incompetence from nieve patients, he

is bound to be dicscovered over a period of time. it thus

is not his appealling image that matters , but the actual

truth behind what he does.

It is therefore divided into an image in terms of a

professional, a person of power, and the pleasing guy. The

professional here needs the truth within him, he needds the

meat of his profession. the man of power may never be of an

appealing image as a person. and the simply likeable person

with a shallow base of utility to society may become

redundant for it. We conclude from this that it is actually

the truth of the person that socitey places appeal to and

not the the visible skin.

33"Creating an appealing image has become more important in contemporary society than is the reality or truth behind that image."
In this era of rich and colorful lives, people will meet and experience kinds of things and are likely to be attract by what are more appealing or grander than others at the first glance. However, it cannot be simply concluded that creating an appealing image is of more significant than the reality or truth behind that image in contemporary society. On the contrary, the latter is of paramount importance in most circumstance.

Admittedly, an appealing appearence attracts peoples¡¯ eyes easily and directly. This phenomenon is nature and reasonable because it accords to the normal process of cognizance of human, that is: people receive information through their sense organs at the first step (often through eyes) and secondly accept that object itself. For example, from the point of view of biology, in remote antiquity, colorful and fresh fruits are liked by mankind in that they are easier to be found and so mankind could save more energy and raise more population. This nature is very similar to that of today¡¯s people. That is reason that under the other same conditions, people always pay attention to what is attractive in appearance, such as beautiful paints, palatial buildings and huge projects.

However, first is not equal to priority. According to the regular rules of cognizance, the final aim for people is to grasp the realty or truth behind the image in order to conclude some useful or valuable information that could be used in later lives, while the first step, seeing image through eyes, is only a kind of approaches. For instance, when talking about Portrait of Mona Lisa, a noted paint of Vinci, what arrests people really is not only this portrait itself but rather the skills of Vinci and to some extent, the later is what numerous researchers are paying attention to. As a matter of fact, people are more concerned about reality and truth behind appearance after serious considering. For example, a customer often cares about the whole characters of a kind of cars if he wants to buy one. It is hardly impossible that he/she merely consider its appearance though that is one of considerable factors.

In addition, it will be harmful for people if only creating an appealing image while neglecting the reality and truth behind it. Not only one thing with an attractive appearance but without essence is short-lived, but also the result might lead to confusion or even calamity. For instance, the famous Egyptian Aswan Dam is a wonder in the history of engineering undoubtedly. However, just because Egyptian government neglected some factors when making plane, the dam has caused ecological calamity so that its disadvantage have exceeded its advantage. In this instance, what is the benefit of the appealing image?

In sum, the reality or truth behind the appearance is more significant than creating an appealing image.

From your essay, I can see that you are a very intelligent and reflective person. Your ideas are deep, and you seem to understand the topic at hand.

However, your expression in English sometimes makes it difficult for the reader to understand easily. Your essay has quite a few "word form" problems -- nature instead of natural, attract instead of attracted, significant instead of significance, paints instead of paintings, etc. -- which significantly detract from the overall quality of your essay.

I really think you have great ideas behind your essay! But they are sometimes hard to understand. For example, your sentence However, first is not equal to priority. has no meaning for me. But the example you've given in this paragraph (that of the Mona Lisa) is a good one for what you seem to be trying to say.

Your last example seems to be reaching a bit, which does not leave a good last impression for the reader. This negative effect is compounded by the excessive brevity of your conclusion.

Overall, your essay has fairly good structure and organization and great ideas, but the grammar and syntax errors detract from the overall quality. I would rate this essay about a 4.0.

Erin Billy:
Thanks very much.
I have known my flaws in my issues as you have said. In fact I am impatient to improve my expression, but I really really do not know how to express what I think in native English. I have to translate them into English mechanically.
I hope u could help me,especially that if you could understand what I want to say while I did the wrong expression, please show me the write ways. I know that only those like you ( native English speaker) could give me the correct expression, but now I always learn writing with other students like me.
Thanks very much!

33. "Creating an appealing image has become more important in contemporary
society than is the reality or truth behind that image."

The speaker asserts that creating an appealing image has become more
important in contemporary society than is the reality or truth behind that
image. I disagree completely with the assertion of speaker despite the
trends placing emphasis on the appealing image of these days because I
believe that the real value of something is shown only through the reality or
truth behind that image.

More than anything else, it is true that these days place more emphasis
on the appealing image than anything else with attachment to sensationalism.
A person is sometimes seduced to purchase some goods without considering its
value and regrets. These trends would be more and more by the trends seeking
more stimulus of people for the future. For showing this, it is not difficult
that we see a person who is not surprised through a stimulus.

On the other hand, a real value should be placed more emphasis than
being shown. Few people disagree with the statement that just being shown is
not durable but things having a real value would be continue for a long time.
For instance, I have many experiences that the quality of stuff that I
purchased by the attraction of appearance give me disappointment. It can be
applied to not only a stuff but also a person. We sometimes make friend by
the attraction of their appearance but we have always disappointed them.
However, the friends who have a real value give us many benefits and we want
to be friends with them as we know them more and more.

In conclusion, it is true that these days place more value on the
appearance. However, although the world has changed by now, it is unchangable
truth that either those who or things which have a real value or truth give
people more and more attractions as a person knows either him or it. Although
its meaning is dimmed with time going by, a real value is more important in
contemporary society.
