095. People work more productively in teams than individually. Teamwork requires cooperation, which motivates people much more than individual competition does.

At this point in time when change is taking place so rapidly leading to increased complexity, people benefit more by working with each other in a cooperative manner as a team to achieve their goals instead of working as individuals competing for each and everything cause cooperation leads to motivation to achieve more and competition can have adverse affects and can pull a person down.

Competition is a good incentive to make people work harder but when competition gets too much it can cause a lot of stress and failure and hence lead to decreased motivation. However working together in a smooth precise manner helps more in every aspect of life and helps an individual to be more motivated.

Team work is an essential element in sports like cricket, base ball, foot ball etc if the whole team doesn’t play as one nothing can be achieved by an individual’s effort. While it is important that each and every individual making the team puts in his or her maximum effort but no single individual can make a difference unless the team as a whole works in harmony to achieve their goal. Hence the victory that they bring for all of them and for their country by working together as a team motivates them more than knowing that they played well individually.

Not only in sports but in any establishment running at any level team work is very important. In a hospital if doctors, nurses and the other staff doesn’t work in a cooperative manner it will lead to a disaster, like during an operation the doctor needs an excellent team which works in coordination to save a patient’s life cause a doctor alone however good they are cannot do everything by themselves. If a patient’s life is saved because of this combined effort it makes each and every individual who worked together to make it happen feel so good cause what can be better than being able to help a person in misery. Hence all of them feel more motivated to help people in need.

In an organization, if it is to succeed each and every person has to put in their best but if everyone is making an effort to succeed on their own and the efforts aren’t properly directed towards the overall success of the organization neither the individuals nor the organization will achieve anything hence no one will be motivated enough to put in their best , therefore it is essential that each one of them work in a directed manner cooperating with each other to achieve the best for themselves and for their organization.

Without team work no harmony can be there and hence no individual can find any kind of motivation, so working together, being there for each other and helping each other gives a lot of satisfaction and motivates people to work better. Thus while we need competition at a certain level and of a certain kind what we really need is cooperation,to succeed ,to stay motivated, happy and satisfied.

work done by an individual is receprocal to his ability and hardwork. there is a limit to this ability and hardwork. there may be some jobs which require much ability then a single person can possess and the hardwork in terms of man-hours beyond the life of an individual. But scientifically the amount of work done ore the productivity, a useful part of that work, can be increased and time be reduced using linearity principles if the resources to that work are increased. For example if a work is completed by 2 men in 2 hours the same can be completed by 4 in just one. But the same job if for example is building a wall can not be done in one hour if the next two are not as professional as the earllier two were, and it may take 4 hours to complete the same job if the next two are very non serious persons rather hinder the work of the first two or they are in such an unhealthy condition that they become a burdon on the first ones instead of ficilitating them. this implies the importance of a 'team'. so we can define a team to be formed by the members from the same interest or profession whose individual work add to the overall productivity of the whole team.

in a team the members suppliment each others' effort and complement each others handicapes to form a complete body of performing all the tasks related to the assigned job. for example in a machine different parts perform various jobs to bring the machine into motion, the machine as a whole is performing a different job by a combined effect of all its parts. if even one part stops working the machine can not fullfil its assigned task. there may, however be some parts which are not so important as some others are, and there removal may not hinder the assigned task of the machine as a whole but their mallfunction may affect the productivity in terms of quality or performance. for example in a computer the processor is the most important part and the i/o port may not look that important but what the advantage of a computer when it is functioning all right and we can not use it due to the non availability of i/o port. or the mouse may look unnecessary in the presence of a keyboard but definitely its removal will reduce the performance of a user and the use of it.

similarly in a game the team work together to bring victory to its credit and it is never one man's show. though there is always a man of the match yet his performance can also be undermined by bad play of one of his team member. take the example of cricket where the baller is supplimenting the efforts of the batesman of his team and the team faces defeat in case any category does not perform well. the fieldsmen may not look that important but most of the matches are lost because of bad performance of the fielders. it is because each member is cooperating with other member, encouraging him to perform the best and motivating by his personal performance. once one fielder dives and catches a difficult shot the overall moral of the team goes to sky which is not there in individualy played games like squash where if one starts playing bad he keep losing stroke over a stroke.

for a team work to produce the desired effects it is important that all contribute to the overall result to be attained doing their part of the work sincerely without the thirst of getting maximum of the credit for an himselfl. if that be the case neither the required productivity can be achived nor the quality and in most of the cases the team ceases to exist. one example is the office work of the government departments where the maximum work is performed by the workers at a very low salary while the credit is taken by some other officer. the continued routine has affected the performance of all these offices and the govenment departments are much behind in thier productivity because a less satisfied worker does not produce a quality work and one day stops working or pruducing a required amount of work in the required time frame.

some times a team may hinder a solo performer to produce the work he individually can produce. for example the best voilen player's voice will be curbed into the overall sound produced by an archestra and people will never come to know about his skill if he will not perform as solo. this is because he was not in a team providing conducive environment to his individual work. if the conducive conditions are there Tailor can prove his worth as goal keeper of England hokey team and can take his team to victories even gets a world fame by becomming the first goalkeeper captain of a hokey team.

There isnt anybody who cannot say he does not appreciate the power of teamwork. The collective efforts of many has always shown promise in surmounting problems and enabling man to make some of his greatest achievements. Teamwork motivates all members of a team and is far more productive than outright competition. But why is this so?

From a historical perspective there has not been any major achievement that did not enjoy teamwork - even in a small part. From the rising of the pyramids, through the spread of Christianity, to our flight to the moon; teamwork has proven effective in attaining very lofty goals. Perhaps as a result we have devloped an inane need for camadrie and rally round when the odds seem insurmountable.

Socially and psychologically, man is not an island. He cannot even function as such. We gain so much when we work as a team. We can draw from the experiences of our teammates. We see issues from their perspective and can brainstorm bigger and better ideas. In addition the will to succeed is greater especially when there is loyalty to the team. We do not want to let our team down so we work harder. This can be seen in sporting events where team members go the extra mile to help their teams win. We cannot forget to mention the motivation offered to us by our teammates when the challenge seems daunting.

Although teamwork is such a profitable venture, it does require humility on all the teamplayers parts. You must be flexible with your ideas and willing to let others lead sometimes. If everybody believes he is right and acts as such the entire essense of teamwork fails. It degenerates into competition to prove who has the better idea, the better system, the more ethical motive and so on. Any endeavour inclined in that direction will surely fail!

Competition, nevertheless, is relevant. It leads to innovation and intrepidness. Many products and services we use and have come to love are as a result of iterative improvement brought about by competion. In most cases, however, the competition is performed the most natural way - between teams.

I agree with the author that team work allows better productivity than individual work. it has been proved that people work well in a team and come up with new ideas when working together.Even the most astonishing scientific discoveries made so far have not been done by a single person,as for example,if we consider the discovery of DNA, it was done by two people who later went on to win a Noble prize.

Again, it has been found that in kindergartens too,the tiny tots are given some simple tasks to be performed together, whether it is playing in sand or just simple learning. In schools too teachers prefer giving team project works to the students as working in a team helps them to learn form each other, present ideas, and cooperate even under stress. At workplace too, it has been found that the employees are given tasks in a team which ensures better productivity.

A man working alone may just be able to give his own ideas as the way he percepts whereas in a team two or more members may present the same idea in a different manner just leading to an idea which is modified by all in the team for better results.

But just as all things come with both pros and cons,so does this issue. To work in a team the most important factor is cooperation.Rife between team members may lead to poor results thus affecting all the members eventually.Another factor is that, to work in a team, all the members should give their best.It has been found that in some situations some people cannot take stress or are lazy to work hard or rather are aware of the fact that his team members are good enough to complete the work on time efficiently.Another problem is the feeling of inferiority among one of the members if ho cannot grasp things as fast and efficiently as others. Thus, it is the duty of the other members to make him feel comfortable and allow him to participate too, rather than just making fun of him.

Thus, I agree with the fact that team work allows better productivity, but team cooperation and understanding between the members is very important for success.
