140 What society has thought to be its greatest social

Recommended Posts

140 WHAT SOCIETY THOUGHT TO BE ITS GREATEST SOCIAL,POLITICAL AND INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS HAVE OFTEN RESULTED IN THE GREATEST DISCONTENT.

The work considered to be greatest achievements of mankind in social and political fields and the individual achievements have often not been great as they were thought & resulted in greatest discontent is central idea of the topic. Some of the examples of social achievements in my view would be the achievements of Luther King Jr. in the freeing of Black people and social reforms by Mother Teresa for helping the poor and the destitutes. The revolutions like French revolution and Russian Revolution were some of the political achievements. The individual achievements of people are difficult to be listed. They are in many fields like arts, science, economic etc.

One perspective of the issue is many of the achievements have been actually been destructive like invention of the nuclear energy leading to nuclear bombs that are detrimental to human society. They were once thought to be an achievement but now considered to be an evil.

Another example is the recent hype about the E-Commerce being a greatest achievement and changing the way business was done, was a failure. This is because initially the issues of the security were not considered by the people . Hence it was not a success as it was supposed to be.

On the contrary, the achievements of Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King Jr. in the social field are great by any means. They can be no doubt about the greatness of these achievements in our society. These great people have made great achievements as an individual in their life. There are also other reformers with similar achievements. So it will be incorrect to conclude that mostly these achievements resulted in great discontent.

Also, the historical revolutions by the people against government were great political achievements. Due to these achievements, there is a check against cruel government by the people with the confidence to fight against them. But there are also fighting in the form of extremism and terrorism which are now viewed with discontent.

Finally the achievements of greatest artists and musicians like Picasso in their field of work were great. Also they cannot be considered to create any discontent and they are still considered as a great artists.

Thus we can conclude that some of the work considered as achievements resulted in discontent, but this cannot be extended to all the achievements. The works of social reformers , artists and many other people are great achievements and they cannot be considered to result in any sort of discontent.

140. "What society has thought to be its greatest social, political, and individual achievements have often resulted in the greatest discontent."

11:18 - 12:03

The author here makes a very general statement with very little practical support. I concede that there are certain achievements which have led to great dissatisfaction among people but in most cases this is not valid. The primary reason being existence of strong evidence which support the contention that there are many achievement s which do not seem to cause any dissatisfaction at present or in future.

There are cases when the achievements of the society has lead to the greatest discontent. No better example can be thought of than the great depression which resulted from industrialization in the 19th century. In 19th century, mechanization of industries, setting of new industries, development of international communication lines and open policies of the government to support industrialization led to Industrial Revolution. Employment to citizens of Europe and America increased as new factories came into being and farmers well benefitted by the hybrid variety of seeds and sophisticated farming tools. The net national product of the countries in Europe and America increased resulting in comfortable lives for its citizens. But later in the beginning of the twentieth century this period of prosperity was followed by a great depression in economic activity of all times. There was excessive production in the producing units and the factories started to cutting down in its work force. As a result the labour wages dwindled and unemployment began to increase. There was great misery in European countries and America. So, what the societ had thought would relieve it from all such problems as poverty and unemployment ultimately led it to such problems.

However, this depression was later sorted out with the help of economists and effective governance. And, today, the European countries and USA are the leading countries in terms of luxury and comfort that its citizens can afford. So, the net result of industrial revolution is beneficial. Morever, today industrialization and globalization is the shortest way to make rapid progresses. Many countries which had earlier thought to maintain a closed economy are now opening up and making its policies more liberal for foreign investment. But still, there are some evils still associated with industrialization, as it leads to the formation of a labour class and the capitalists. The differences in the levels of income between these two classes increases with time. In sum, industrialization, thought to be the greatest achievement by a society has a mixed effect and necessary for progress and keeping pace with the world economy.

Nonetheless, there are achievements which have not yet resulted in any discontent till today and there is a very little chance of the occurrence of such things. Consider for example the freedom achieved by the asian and african nations from british and french control. China, America, India, and many more countries who got freedom from the shackles of foreign control fifty or more years back are now prospering at a much higher rate than that during the periods of foreign rule. USA has surpassed every other nations in almost every field of interest. This achievement cannot be suspected to lead to any discontent among its citizens resulting from from their independence. So, such achievements are in direct contradiction to the author's claim.

If individual achievements mentioned in authors claim is interpreted as achievements made by individuals then there are numerous examples where individual achievements have lifted the society and are still benefitting the society. For example, niether Bill Gates not society would be dissatisfied by his establishment of the world's leading company which manufactures the most used operating system.

In sum, the author claim, although applicable in certain cases is not true in most cases. The reason being the numerous achievements which have lifted the standard of living of the society rather than causing dissatisfaction. But it can lead to dissatisfaction among citizens as in the case of Great Depression. But, on the other hand, it has caused great happiness among people as in the case of indepence achieved by nations under colonial rule. Also, individual achievement are most of the time beneficial to the individual and also to society.

A really good and well explained example. But whats the aim , to proove that dicontent may arise or that even this discontent is good(as u try to show in the next para)

"What society has thought to be its greatest social, political, and individual achievements have often resulted in the greatest discontent."

----------------------------------------------------------------------

For centuries our society has been achieving something or the other achievement. Such achievements have made our life easier to live than earlier. But sometimes some achievements have resulted into greatest discontent.

The achievements, which are beneficial to everybody or to greater part of society has rarely caused any discontent, for example the achievement of World Wide Web. This achievement has more advantages and scarcely any disadvantages. It has made the communication between people fast and cost of such communication is affordable by almost all the society. Though sometimes the virus spread through the Internet cause discontent, it is negligible as compared to the advantages of it. Also the modern technology has made available many anti-virus softwares, which can protect our computers from the virus. The other examples of beneficial achievements we can see are telephone, aeroplane, different automatic equipments which can do the work of human being, automobiles etc. All these achievements have more beneficial results and hardly any disadvantages.

Some of the individual achievements have been resulted into beneficial results for society, for example achievement of Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa worked for the poor and orphan children of slums of Calcutta. Her achievement has changed life of many poor children and thus has benefited the society. No one will say that this individual achievement has caused any discontent.

However the political achievements cannot always be advantageous for everybody in the society. It is difficult to satisfy the whole nation at one time for the political leaders. Sometimes they have to take the decisions to achieve something. People may or may not be happy with such results. If people do not like the decisions of political leaders then the achievements caused by those decisions can result into discontent. For example the present Iraq and US war. Many of the US citizens were against the war. But Bush administration decided to go for war. They achieved success in banishing the Saddam Hussein from Iraq. But still people are discussing that government should not have gone for war instead they should have concentrated on internal problems like declining economical situation. Many people are unsatisfied with this achievement of Bush administration. It has resulted into greatest discontent among the citizens of United States.

Sometimes the achievement, which can cause harm by misusing it, can result into greatest discontent. For example after the invention of nuclear weapons, when those were used on Hiroshima, the whole world mourned for the people of Hiroshima. The achievement of invention of nuclear weapons resulted into disaster than into energy source. It resulted into discontent among people of the whole world.

Though all the achievement of society does not result into greatest discontent some of them may result into discontent. The achievements if misused then it may result into discontent. Also sometimes political achievements cannot make happy the people of the nation and can result into discontent.

Somehow I think the exemplars of Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King Jr. have not touched upon the point of discontent.

Yes, their achievements were undeniably overwhelming, but weren't there the slightest of discount by the vested interests,

for example, the preexisting nobles and the well-off families who might oppose to the clamor and pursuit of egalitarianism?

Yes, supposedly there were, but just that the level of discontent was much overhauled by the overarching successes such that

not only would these egalitarian initiatives be widely accepted as 'greatest achievements' in themselves

but also would the 'discontent' not be deemed as 'greatest', at most 'occasional' or 'in a periphery sense'!

In sum, I would specify that the skeptics or vested interests would be contentious, but not as 'great' as to jeopardize the programs!
