Hi Erin,
This is my first essay submit to Test Magic. I am absolutely bowled over by the service provided by your team. It is extremely helpful and easy to use. Keep up the great work. Please send your comments on this essay of mine. I took around 30 mins to pen it down. Thanks Deepdive. __________________________________________________ _____ Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time __________________________________________________ _____ I am in concordance with the point of view expressed in the topic that important truths begin as outragous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time. At every stage in the evolution of societies, certain knowledge is considered as true and is binding upon the inmates of the society. These ideas might have been bequethed by the ancestors or unraveled through man's curiosity. For example theories about the existence of God, life after death, birth of the earth etc. find different explanations in societies. These are treated as undeniable and held in high esteem. Any contradictory views are generally not encouraged. In such situations, the unearthing of a truth which displaces the popularly held viewpoints, gives rise of antagonism and rebellion. From the annals of history we can find several supporting examples to buttress my point. In the ancient world, it was widely accepted that the earth was the center of the universe and the sun and the other planets merely revolved around it. When Galileo made the remarkable discovery about sun being being the center, thus negating the existing thesis, his ideas were considered equivalent to blasphemy. He was jailed and tortured because he had tried to shake the accepted wisdom the society. Only several years after his death, people realized that the thesis propunded by him was in fact correct. A similar opposition was faced by the modern thinkers of the medieval world during Renaissance. The period of history before this was rightfully called the dark period where the society had stagnated and lost the spirit of enquiry and reasoning. Then came a revolution called Rennaisance which swept all through Europe and saw an awakening of the people's mind. This was the period of reform, rebirth or revival. People recognized the need for free thinking and scientific enquiry. They were no longer ready to blindly accept the ideas imposed on them by the heads of the church. They demanded scientific explanations for every thesis. Thus, through constant struggle and an indomitable grit, the thinkers of this era make abundant progress in science, literature, architecture, music and other arts. Several existing theories were negated and new theories, grounded in scientific reasons, replaced them. Thus, we see that any idea which conflicts with the accepted wisdom of the times, faces many trials and tribulations to be accepted. This is basic to human nature. Man is always averse to change. He likes to hold on to his beliefs and finds it difficult to adjust to a contradictory view point. Faced with a conflicting situation he tries to fight it out and dislodge it. Thus, any truths which tries to supplant popularly held beliefs face challenges in establishing themselves. |

172 Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time.
It is often believed that important truths are always deviated from the conventional wisdom. The supporters of this statement believe that important facts begin as vicious attacks upon accepted beliefs. I fully agree with this and I shall provide examples to back up my stand. Humans are dogmatic, our brain is designed in such a way that when it devotes memories to store certain concepts, it will be very difficult to get rid of them later on. Hence whenever a rebellious idea is suggested, we would have a hard time digesting and accepting it. This situation is exacerbated if our tenets are reinforced by traditional teachings or common wisdom. We would try to ignore radical idea at the first time, and if the it is too difficult to set aside, we would find ways to discredit it. we often take new revelations as outrageous assaults because they hurt our ego and disrupt the balance of our belief system. The situation is especially conspicuous in the area of science. Copernicus's theory directly challenged the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The theory proposed that Earth revolved around the Sun, and not vice versa, as the conventional wisdom suggested. This important truth was ferociously resisted by the Clergymen and the public because it was uncomfortable, radical and common sense defying. Similarly, evolution according to Darwin was labelled as "heretical" by church and general public the time it was proposed. Public had a hard time with the austere fact that human evolved from apes because it denigrates human to the level of animal. Until today, even when majority of scientific community accepts evolution as both a fact and a theory, some people still found evolution offensive because it doesn't conform to their dogma. Important social truths share the same plight with scientific truth. Take for example, it was long believed that blacks are second class human compared to the white. This piece of belief went unchallenged for many years. Thus when the blacks gathered to fight for their rights in 1960s, they were scorned, harassed, attacked or even assassinated. The truth that all men are created equal, regardless of race, were met with fierce opposition from the public because they were not ready to accept it. Similarly, public dismissed the truth that women are as capable as men it was first introduced. Women had to fight for the rights of schooling, the rights of equal treatment and the rights of voting before some small achievements are materialised. It's difficult to measure the sacrifice those women had undergo because of their conviction. To sum up, it is true that whenever new truths are proposed, they would suffered heavy scepticism from the majority, just because they are different from conventional beliefs. Thus I have nothing but infinite admiration for iconoclasts because they have the courage to defend the truth even though doing so will set them at odds with the society at large. |

172 Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time.
If the truth that people believed since long time proved to be specious, then obviously it is difficult for people to favor it. Thus, I advocate the issue statement that truths that attack upon accepted wisdom of time are vicious. Many scientific discoveries, which are now approbated as universal truth, were strongly condemned during their evolution. For example, the great Polish astronomer, Copernicus, challenged the geocentric cosmology that had been dogmatically accepted since time of Aristotle. His discovery that Earth goes round the Sun was violently opposed by ignorant Christian churches for next three hundred years. Moreover, Galileo’s support for heliocentric theory got him into trouble with Roman Catholic Church. The Inquisition convicted him of heresy and forced him to recant his support for Copernican theory. Thus, the concepts regarding traditional credence cannot be easily changed. Additionally, sometimes it is the human egotism that precludes him from accepting the factuality. Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection was the most controversial theory in science history. His theories of evolution through natural selection set off bitter controversy among biologists, religious leaders and the general public. Many people angrily criticized his revolutionary idea that human beings were descended from apes. During that period, it was really difficult for people to assent the fact that their ancestors were monkeys. It is hard to change beliefs engrossed inside human mind. For decades men were not agreeing to believe than women are as efficient as men. They strongly believed that woman’s boundaries are limited to kitchen only. Several revolutionary actions were taken for equal rights for woman. The National Woman's Party first proposes the Equal Rights Amendment to eliminate discrimination on the basis of gender. The fight for woman rights was strongly opposed by dogmatic people. And, still in countries like Afghanistan men enslave women. In sum, whenever real truth has been exposed among the public, it became the victim of skepticism and disapproval. Since this truths are in contrast with people’s so called beliefs. Thus, it is criticized by most of people. |

Issue Essay
Every society is laid with some beliefs that are accepted by all and it is expected that everybody abides it. Such beliefs become a code of conduct over the period of time and any aberration from this supposedly right behavior, thinking, act is believed to be eccentric! We have seen a lot of examples in the past about how a small change in thinking has brought about a whole new set of thinking which shattered the myths and beliefs of the past!
To illustrate, church was believed to be the supreme power years ago! The clergy was pious and any decree from them was blindly followed by the people. The norms and beliefs were laid as per the likes of the clergy and any thing outside the realm was believed to be profane. They strongly believed that earth is flat and knew nothing about space, science etc. Those who thought differently like Sir Issac newton, Galileo, Copernicus etc. who instead of being superstitious and devout like the rest in their time were believed to be wrong! They were strongly condemned by all, but their inventions and discoveries became the stepping stone or shall I say the gateway to modern science for the mankind. Well the complete dominance of church was an all together different era then the era when the first ever flight was designed by the Wright brothers. When people knew more about science, the outlook was very much broad but still there was a strong belief that nothing other than birds can fly! The apparent truth was that something so heavy can fly, people mocked the wright brothers who thought differently than others did and no body but the brothers had faith in something that in today’s world we take for granted – An air plane! It becomes difficult for the society to shatter its beliefs and think out of the box right away and those who do think out of the box are resisted! But at the end of the day “Truth always triumphs” and gives way to an altogether different and unexplored perspect to all! Last edited by goin4gre : 2009 February 18th at 06:28 AM. "Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time."
It is rightly said that “truth always triumphs”. Many times in our lives we find truth as anthesis to our firmly hold belief and we are liable to accept that truth. It is just as an attack to our view points and to the wisdom of the time. Truth keeps attacking one or the other amiss opinion of ours. But to accept truth is also imperative in the realm of our lives. It becomes conspicuously bad for us sometimes since we have gone into a comfort zone with our dogmatic approaches but when truth strikes we find ourselves specious. As we have a belief that there is incarnation of human life‘s after demise but is it stated with proof? The answer is blunt NO. Someday we may face a truth which states this belief as false. And it will attack our doctrine approach and debunk our holded opinion. By the time we are required to update ourselves so that we can be able to remove the fallacious interpretations and make our arguments based on the truth. Also we sometimes become hallucinated and make those beliefs which are invalid. At the very young age just by looking to the sky we holded a belief that the sky is of light blue colour which is an invalid premise. It has been proved by the scientist that the colour of the sky is black or dark blue. When we learnt it, our opnion was contradicted by the truth. In sum, its not enough to rage against the lie, you’ve got to replace it with the truth. Our doctrine approaches has to be derelict which leads us to fallacy and the proved truth is to be accepted. We have to accept truth even though it contradicts our opinion and attacks the wisdom of the time. Pls suggest the flaws in it. Pls rank it between 0-6. thnx in advance |

I am in accordance with the author’s view that important truth can be outrageous or at least uncomfortable and attacks the accepted wisdom of the time.
It is the human nature to blindly accept the views imposed by the aboriginal people. These beliefs are being inculcated in them from a long time. Any outrageous fact proposed by the individual attacking the old beliefs is not taking well the people in that society. For instance the concept of the solar eclipse was wrongly presumes to be the swallowing of the sun by the god Rahu in the old religious books. This view as readily accepted by the people. The disclosure that the event was due to the positioning of the sun and the earth was not swallowed easily the people in the society. Although more number of people now believes it that is a scientific event but still there is class in the society that finds it hard to accept and relate it with fictional stories. Any individual roadway to oppose such fabricated facts from long time is not always easy. It has to face a lot of oppositions and conflicts within the society. Such gritty attempt may be successful some time but if not quoted with strong reasoning to a greater section of the society, it can be unsuccessful too. Hence the countering facts should be presented with better structure and acceptable illustrations. For example the rebellious fact proposed by Galileo that the sun is the stationary object in the solar system and the earth revolves around it was not accepted by the society at first. The reason being it was not completely proved by his experiments about his findings. It was later taken by the other scientist and they provided the elaborate reasoning for his thesis. I feel that this primitive behaviour of the common man needs to be changed. They need to be more fragile withier their perception and be open for any reforms with ease in light of proper evidences. With that we may lead to a better society which has space to reform for positive things. |

Hi all,
please rate this essay and point out flaws! ================================================== ======== Man has such aversion to change that anything that disproves his belief is certain to be welcomed with contempt. It is quite true that many truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time. According to me, there are two kinds of people as far as wisdom is concerned. The first kind of people are just happy to believe what most others believe to be true. That is they simply do not want to think otherwise. The other kind of people are quite interesting and it is because of such kind of people science and technology has come this far and will scale greater heights in the future. The specialty of these people is that they never accept things just like that. They look for evidences that may prove or disprove the accepted belief and put forth new theories based on their study in case they believe that the current wisdom lacks substance. There are many instances in history where the accepted beliefs were confronted with radical proposals that were treated with antagonism. People are so opinionated that there is no tolerance for a view that is even slightly against from that of the mass. For example, when Galileo put forward a theory stating that the earth is round and not flat, he was ridiculed and pilloried by commons who believed that earth was flat. Today we speak of that truth as common sense. If you need more examples, take the case of the father of evolution, Charles Darwin. He said man came from unicellular organisms and everyone laughed at him. Think of the man who first had the thought that humans came fly up in the air. How sardonically he must have been treated by his fellow beings? Thus history shows us that many such truths that are considered wisdom today were thought of as outrageous and folly yesterday. Of course, much of the commonsense of tomorrow may seem insensitive today! ================================================== ======== |
