"The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives"

Admittedly, history teaches us some very important lessons which have relevance in our daily lives. They can be applied to our experiences today and prevent some difficult situations from occurring. Nevertheless, I also feel that study of history is also important because it tells us about our culture, some great people and their thoughts and some of the great inventions and discoveries of the past. If we do not study history, we can not be thankful to our ancestors and appreciate their efforts. Hence, I feel relevance of history in today’s life is not the only reason we should study history for. For that matter we should study history to appreciate the contributions of our ancestors for creating the world we live in.

Today, once again we are experiencing inflation and the economy is going down. This reason might intrigue us to study a relevant situation i.e. “The Great Depression” that occurred about 70 years. Studying this event will help prevent similar situation to repeat again and we already know our mistakes from the past. Hence, it is necessary to study history for its relevance to our daily lives.

Today we know of India which is free and run by its own people. But it was not the case 60 years ago. Mahatma Gandhi is known for contribution in the freedom fight of India. India had been under the rule of British for more than 300 years. It was his and his followers’ efforts that brought independence to India. However all this might not be relevant today, but we need to appreciate the efforts of all the freedom fighters that made this possible. Therefore, if we not study history we will never come to know about it and hence we will never appreciate our ancestors for their efforts.

Some of the technologies that we use today are inventions of the past. For example, Telephone was invented by Graham bell. Everybody uses telephones today. For that matter, the mobile technology has more or less replaced the fixed telephones. However, Graham bell is the soul inventor behind it. Similarly, there are many other inventions in history that we ought to know about. We should not take them for granted and hence we should study history in order to appreciate the efforts of our ancestors. Also, efforts of the contemporaries would also not be recognized if our future generations do not study history.

Hence, it is necessary, but not sufficient, to study history to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives. We also need to study history to appreciate the great contributions made by our ancestors.
