Artists should pay little attention to their critics.* Criticism tends to undermine and constrain the artist's creativity. *those who evaluate works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
Sometimes, especially in the case of young artists, criticism tends to undermine and constrain the artist’s creativity. The artists may get discouraged and hence may withdraw their piece of work. Nevertheless, if one takes the criticism in its true sense, it is based on improving the work of the artist. Hence, I believe the artist should pay foremost attention their critics in order to make their work of the highest quality. Critics are quite experienced in the field and hence justified in the evaluating the piece of work. They evaluate a piece of work without any bias towards it. They have the quality of looking at the piece of work from every angle. For e.g, while evaluating a film, the critics look at each piece of work - direction, acting, costumes, theme etc. They look at individual efforts as well as the combined work. Their criticism can be harsh but since it is unbiased, it should be taken as genuine and in positive spirit. A young artist may get discouraged by their criticism. However, if the artists eventually want to evolve in their field, they should take the criticism positively and try to improve their work. The TV shows like ‘American idol’ and ‘Dancing with the stars’ would be perfect example for this purpose. Those contenders who take the criticism positively and try to work on their weakness pointed out by the critics, tend to improve. And hence, mostly they reach the finals and win the competition. On the other hand, when people tend to get discouraged by the critics and do not take their views positively, however good they might be at their artwork, they get knocked out. They tend to stop putting any effort and hence the quality of their artwork deteriorates. Usually a person looks for an evaluation after composing a piece of artwork. However, if the artists feel that the people who give appreciation for their work (for e.g., friends and relatives) are the true evaluators, then it is their delusion. A true evaluation is one which the evaluator focuses on the weak points and takes the artist’s attention towards it. Hence, in order to flourish in his/her field, an artist should pay foremost attention to its critics. Since they are experienced and unbiased, they tend to focus the artists’ attention towards the weak points, improving upon which one might attain the highest quality of artwork. |
