Issue 167. Please review it
Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study because acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated.
Education, for some people, can be thorough knowledge and deep understanding of a subject and for some, knowledge on varied subject matter. Best education method depends on field of study, level of education (Graduation or Post-Graduation) and also on person to person. Hence, I do not agree that acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated and that the universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study. Medical profession is a field of study that requires its student to be thorough in their understanding. For the students to be able to observe the patients they need to be highly skilled. For them, acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines may not make sense. However, on the other hand, it would be very beneficial for a student of Management Studies to acquire knowledge of various academic disciplines. For example, it might be helpful if they know about all the technical fields since it would add to their experience while working. Hence, in my opinion, having knowledge on various fields depends on the profession of the student. Therefore, it might not be the best way of educating students in all professions. Moreover, method of education also depends on the level of education the student is undergoing. For example, an undergrad might require knowledge on varied subjects. Since they have just started with their field of study, it might be beneficial for them if they are required to take a variety of courses outside their field. A computers undergrad who takes courses in biotechnology might develop interest in it and think of pursuing bioinformatics in future. However, a post graduate student who has already decided upon his/her field of study might not be interested in doing courses in other departments. Therefore, if they do not have the zeal to pursue, they might not benefit from it. Lastly, acquiring a few credits in other fields of study might not give them a full understanding of the subject. A few courses here and there might not help them and might be total waste of time and money for a few. They might undergo the course just for the credit sake but forget it as soon as they are done with it. However, if there is an option, some eager students might make the full use of it. They might take it as an experiment before pursuing higher education. Hence, requiring students to acquire knowledge of varied subjects might not be fruitful for all them. Therefore, I do not agree the best way of educating students would be to require them to take a variety of courses outside their field of study. It all depends on the field of study, level of education the student is pursuing and also on the students. |

Hey I liked your essay. But I thought that instead of disagreeing with the topic, you were better off saying that acquiring knowledge in various disciplines may be beneficial ( for undergrads) and useless (for post grads), depending on particular situation. You already argued for and against the topic. So it should be okay for you to just qualify your points instead of taking a particular side.
