195. "It is possible to identify a person's politics within a very short time of meeting him or her. Everything about people—their clothes, their friends, the way they talk, what they eat—reflects their political beliefs."
First impression is not always true and short meeting is very little time to identify a person’s politics. The materialistic things mentioned by the author certainly do not reflect a person’s politics. A very short meeting does not reflect a person’s real-self. Firstly, a person can always pose to be different. For example, in job interviews, almost everybody goes prepared. People always prepare for the questions they think the interviewer is going to ask and hence, during the interviews they do not have think much while answering. Whether the interview is technical (related to the job profile) or behavioral, it does not reflect the true self of the person. Hence, short meeting do not reflect the politics of a person since he/she can always be prepared to pretend. Secondly, a person’s thinking changes over time. Many a times, there are certain situations in our life that force us to bring upon a change. For example, a recent college graduate might be very gullible at work but he/she will certainly change with experience. Hence, a person who meets them at very starting of their career might make a wrong impression of them. Hence, we should always take the circumstances in mind when judging a person. Another example that comes to my mind is of Mahatma Gandhi. He got married at a very young age. More than a family pressure to get married, he admits in his autobiography that it was his lust that carried him. However, as he matured, his thinking changed completely. He led a life of austerity. Hence, one cannot judge a person in a very short period of time. Moreover, the author contends that what they wear, eat, and the way they talk reflect politics beliefs of people. However, these things are situational. For example, when a person goes to party, he/she might be dressed differently as opposed when they go for work. Similarly, person might like to eat very simple food at home. However, during parties they might like to take a glass of wine with their meal. Similarly, a person might be very formal and reserved in speech during first meeting but extremely casual with close friends and relatives. Hence, trying to understand politics of a person by his clothes, what they eat and how they talk might give a false impression. Author also talks about judging a person by his/her friends. However, a person might have large number of friends – from college, work, friends of friends etc. and each person is different in their thinking. Even in the case of close friends, it is not true that they have the same thinking. Perhaps they just like to spend time with each other. Hence, it is wrong to judge people from the kind of friends they have. To conclude, a limited meeting is very short a time to judge someone since they can always pretend to impress. Also, the materialistic things likes clothes and food are very situational and hence do not reflect the true self of a person. Friends are also not the true reflection since a person might have a large number of friends. |

hi ruchia!
![]() yes, i've read your essay and i think it is off point since you misunderstood the meaning of "politics". i think that you'll have to rewrite the essay (if you would like to do so) considering the actual meaning of "politics". "politics" is related to policies of countries and governments. hope that helps and i'm waiting for your essay (if you'd rewrite it). see you soon ruchia ![]() |
