112. "The intellectual benefits of attending a university or college are vastly overrated: most people could learn more by studying and reading on their own for four years than by pursuing a university or college degree."

Self studying and reading can give one all the information on the subject. However, attending a university or a college has diversified intellectual benefits than what people can achieve by mere studying and reading by themselves.

Most people think attending a university/ college is something that has been happening for years and people go through it because it is conventional way of learning. However, it has its own benefits. By attending a college, a student gets to interact with a lot of other people – teachers, friends and other classmates. The presence of pundits in the respective fields in an institution provides the required supervision and guidance in understanding concepts and theories. This helps to save a lot of time and effort in trying to comprehend things on your own. The presence of other students also provides a congenial environment for learning and discussion. It is easier to learn by discussing and debating ideas and concepts with fellow students than by rote learning.

University curriculum also requires students to do some assignments and take exams. This way student is motivated to keep studying all through the four years of university. However, a person who does not attend school may get digressed, and exhausted in his endeavors which might de-motivate him.

Moreover, attending a university gives a student an advantage to experiment all the book learning. It gives access to a large number of laboratories and students can gain a first hand experience. For some subject such as biology and chemistry, learning through experimentation may be of utmost importance. This might not be possible for a student who pursues studies by oneself.

Intellectual development does not just include attaining the knowledge on a subject. It is the overall development of a person. Hence, in university one can take part in extra co-curricular activities which gives a student an experience and an opportunity to enhance his/her skills as a team member and a manager. On the other hand, a person studying by oneself may not able to participate in such activities.

A person who does attend a university or a college and but studies by self-reading, may attain an understanding of the subject, but it would be a learning lacking in direct experience. University curriculum motivates a student to learn. It is also an opportunity for a student to enhance soft skills which one cannot attain by self reading.
