"It is easy to welcome innovation and accept new ideas. What most people find difficult, however, is accepting the way these new ideas are put into practice."

Innovation and new ideas help to advance the world and make improvement. However, putting these new ideas into practice is not as facile as one imagines and it would be even more difficult for the public to accept them. Innovative ideas after all advance our knowledge, repair faulty authority and improve our quality of lives.

In education, new ideas allow us to improve our understandings of the world. Before Charles Darwin proposed his theory of evolution, most people believed that our world was created by God in seven days. His findings, accompanied by empirical evidence, lead us to understand the concept of adaptation and natural selection, which organisms are shaped by the environment. This theory provides an alternative explanation of creationism; however, it is attacked by many pious groups today and some religious schools refuse to teach their students the Charles Darwin's theory.

The idea of Democracy was once an innovative idea in organizational structure, which it came into practice after several failures and revolutions. Monarchy was a common form of government in the ancient and medieval periods. Under monarchism, people do not participate in deliberative functions. They are excluded from administration of justice and protection of law. With the tyranny authority, people lack liberty. In contrast, Democracy allows people to voice their opinions and express their minds. Under democracy, the citizens enjoy legitimized freedoms and liberties, which are protected by the constitution. The introduction of Democracy brings fundamental changes in power and abolishes the monarchy organizational structure. Although the idea of democracy has proven a great success to keep the government and its citizens in equilibrium, it has taken decades for some countries to completely revolve into the new organizational structure, where there are few countries in the world still refuse the practice of Democracy.

In technology, people have suggested many ideas to improve our quality of lives; however, very few of them are put into practices. For instance, HIV vaccine is an appealing idea to alleviate the epidemic; however, it took more than 10 years to discover the strain, after many trials and errors and laborious work of thousands diligent researches. Although the rate of effective is low at 30%, it is a breakthrough in the HIV epidemic era. This vaccine trial is a controversial one because all vaccines have to undergo human sample in order to verify its effectiveness, which many people consider it to be unethical.

In sum, innovation and new ideas bring advancement to education, organizational structure and medical treatment. It may be difficult to put these ideas into practice, but progression can only come through trials and errors. Although the process is arduous, it is worthwhile once it yields positive results.

"It is easy to welcome innovation and accept new ideas. What most people find difficult, however, is accepting the way these new ideas are put into practice."

"The only constant thing in the world is change"

Humanity, from the very beginning, has strived against opposition of varying strength. Early humans strived to the basics of living -- food and shelter. From being hunter-gatherers of neolithic period, as humanity progressed through bronze and iron ages, the struggle to improve became more and more pronounced. Despite being aimed at the improvement of selves, anyone who tried to implement the changes always faced opposition. Although we have progressed to cyber age and expanded our reach to Moon and Jupiter, this opposition to any implementation of new ideas remain firm in the minds of humans. Are we all just hypocrites?

Humans are social animals. The most greatest gift that humans possess which differentiates them from animals is the control that human mind can excert over insticts. This discerning ability has entrenched the concept of self within the human mind. This concept of self starts developing at the very early stages of birth. Recent medical studies has proven that a newborn baby realizes this distinction - that he is separate from from his mother - during first couple of days.

By judicious use of their mind, humans are capable of thinking and weighing the impact of their actions and thoughts. This enables them to analyze problems they face and find solutions and then analyze the solutions to find the optimal one. But this ability does not always guarantee a good result as not every human is capable of controlling own mind and defining own self. Humans are slaves to the senses and always try to create a comfort zone by maintaining the status quo. Their concept of self -ego- oppose any infringement to the comfort zone, however good it is.

As an example, when Alexander Graham Bell invented telephone, after patenting the invention, he tried to sell it to many telephone companies. But he could not find any takers. The telegraph companies' decision makers could not overcome their ego - any number of reasons like financial, infrastructural ..etc. may be attributed to this decision - and refused to acknowledge the importance of voice carried over wires. it took one phone call informing the medical team about a train accident which saved hundreds of lives to shake up their belief that telegraph was all the world needed.

In conclusion, humans are afraid of changes without any apparent reason. Probably, this is because the concept of comfort zone is ingrained to the human mind and one's ego strives to find its comfort zone. People accept ideas only if the acceptance does not shake them out of their comfort zone. Slowly and steadily, if the implementation brings about positive changes to the comfort zone, the change is well accepted. Otherwise, people would find ways to circumvent the forced upon changes.

MPHProgram,
I read your essay after I wrote mine.
Your examples states that the respective ideas did not find any takers. But the problem assignment is " It is easy to welcome innovation and accept new ideas ... ". I feel your introduction supports this point, but the body effectively opposes it
