AWA Argument:

Topic:

The following appeared in a memo from a vice president
of Alta Manufacturing.
"During the past year, Alta Manufacturing had thirty
percent more on-the-job accidents than nearby Panoply
Industries, where the work shifts are one hour shorter
than ours. Experts believe that a significant contributing
factor in many on-the-job accidents is fatigue and sleep
deprivation among workers. Therefore, to reduce the
number of on-the-job accidents at Alta and thereby
increase productivity, we should shorten each of our
three work shifts by one hour so that our employees will
get adequate amounts of sleep."

Response:

The article depicts the theory put forward by the vice president of the alta manufacturing company. Stated here is the fact that employees at alta manufacturing have encountered thirty percent more accidents than their neighboring panoply industries. Vice president of alta concludes that the rudimentary cause for this sort of increase is the extra working hour for the employees at his firm, which leads to lack of sleep and fatigue. He has directly concluded the above hypothesis by putting forth the fact that panoply has provided their employees with an hour of less work than alta. The facts stated above are not comprehensive and compelling to the reader.

First and foremost reason why alta workers are facing thirty percent more health hazourds may be due to the fact that, alta has implemented no stringent rules on the workers safety, unlike their neighbor panoply. Tools used for manufacturing at alta may be outdated and prehistoric which I believe may lead to accidents. Panoply on the other hand might be using the best and most modernistic tools available in the market.

Secondly, the age of the works plays an important role here. Panoply may have employed workers whose average age is far younger than the employees at alta. More aged are the workers, more ignorance, lesser the output and more physical and mental strain. Eventually this explains why even after an hour of extra working produces lesser output.

Thirdly, nothing has been mentioned about the type of firm the panoply is. It could be even a packing industry, where eventually the amount accidents are meant to be less than the manufacturing ones. For example say a manufacturing company uses a grinding machine, which is obviously meant to be dealt with care. A slight mistake and this might trigger an accident. Wherein the probability of such machines in a packing firm is very insignificant.

Fourth and the last reason that prompts the reader to go against the theory is the fact that nowhere in the article is it mentioned that the panoply industries are flourishing with loads of productivity. Might be possible that their productivity is in the same level as alta’s.

In conclusion, these results derived by the vice president of altas may not reduce the accident issues to a complete zero percent. But to completely understand why there are more accidents, we need to look into other factors, such as age of employees, type of tools used, and the production limit. Few results may be obtained by investigating factors such as what is the average age of each worker for both firms? What are the recreation hours for both firms? Such questions and statistical data might lead us to the exact resolution.
