Please review my essay "Great success"

"Look at any person today who has achieved great success in his or her career or profession, and you'll see either someone without a significant personal life or someone with significant personal failings."

 

In your view, how accurate is the statement above? Develop and support your viewpoint with relevant reasons and examples and by considering ways in which the statement may or may not be true.

 

 

While the above statement holds some merit to it, it is crucial, however, to define first the meaning of success. What is success? How someone is considered successful? According to recent research by Dr. Ken Zaragoza, there are various forms of success. For example, there is financial success, where someone is relatively superior to others in terms of monetary value, investments and real estate. Then there is professional or career success, where someone is achieving higher ranks on the corporate ladder or sealing outstanding business deals. Healthy well-being, beauty and social relationships are also other aspects of success. Overall, success is a state where someone is happy and content with his life achievements.

 

Contrary to what the statement says however, all forms of success require a significant personal life, one that is filled with hope and vision, and supplemented with a healthy outlook on life and a winning attitude. It is a fallacy to believe that someone has achieved any success without having a significant personal life. Warren Buffett, for example, is the richest man in the world and someone who can be dubbed a financial success; however, on the personal level, he is a humble person with warm relationships with those around him and within his field. If Buffett did not have the interpersonal skills to nurture those sentiment relationships, it is highly unlikely that he would have achieved his financial milestones and became the wealthiest person in the world. Moreover, on the personal level, Buffett has his own charity foundation that gives scholarships to underprivileged students and he enjoys giving back to the community, which illustrates how happy and content he is with his personal life and how his life is influencing those around him and having a profound impact on them. Therefore, it is wrong to believe that success can be achieved without having a significant personal life.

 

On the other hand, in harmony with the original statement, success can be achieved despite having pitfalls and challenges in one's life. Success can not be hindered by problems; problems should be considered as an opportunity for learning and growth, because growth and success can not be achieved without being challenged. Consider Robin Sharma, the famous international best-selling author of "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari", "The Greatness Guide" and other best-selling books. While he was able to attain success on the personal and professional levels, he suffered a divorce case from his wife after 15 years of marriage. While this case might have been devastating for some, Sharma learnt from this failure and considered it as an opportunity for learning. He was able to stand on his feet and achieve international success as an author and trainer despite the fact he suffered many failures on professional and even personal level. Therefore, it is correct to believe that a successful person is someone who has faced failures in his/her life; however, s/he was not hindered by these challenges.

 

Consequently, while I agree with the partial idea that someone who is successful might have faced failures in his/her life, I disagree that this person does not have a significant personal life. Being able to stand up again, on its own, makes his/her life significant.
