hi,

I notice some school application forms still asking for 'overall' GRE result. Is this simply the sum of the verbal and quant scores ( /1600) or should the AWA score be 'converted' to a number out of 800 (so 5.5 would be 733 etc)??

I don't think so. You don't need to convert the GRE AWA scores. The complete tallies are out of 1600. For the folks who took the GRE before october 2002, the tallies are out of 2400 (?Not sure about this one.)

Your AWA scores remain as such. 6.0/6.0
