I wrote argument 65 for 3 times! plz give me some advices
SPOILER: Thank you very much for any words! TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States. "For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses." First time WORDS: 364 TIME: 00:50:00 DATE: 2008-07-02 9:49:39 In this memo the prseident of a cheese store recommends taking priority of domestic cheeses over imported ones. This recommendation is based on last year's sales report of the newest store and a recent survery in Cheeses of the World magazine. However, a close scrutiny will show that this recommendation is not well reasoned from these evidences. To begin with, the advice of rebalaning inventory is based on unwarranted assumption that there is increasing preference for domestic cheeses through the country. This assumption is implied for the arguer's citation of sale report in their newest chain store and a recent magazine survey. First, the sale condition in only one store cannot represent the whole situation in all stores, thus is not able to reflect the actual market preference. And the magazine's survey is carried out only among its subscribers, which also causes our reasonable dout to its representiveness. There are other questionable points such as why preference in the newest store only pointing to cheeses from Wisconsin and whether the trend of increasing preference indicates customer's priority over imported cheeses, which add up to the above analyzed reasons make this assumption ungrounded. Then, the recommendation is further more deduced from a problematic chain assumption that rebalancing stocking between imported and domestic productions can limit inventory, thus reduce expense, which further more can improve the company's profits. In fact, every connection between this chain assumption is vulnerable. First, adjusting the percentage between different goods does not necessarily lead to inventory limitation, and actually expands the inventory as a whole. Second, the limitation in the quantity of inventory does not necessarily lead to expense reduction, considering that domestic cheeses may be more expensive than those imported. At last, the decrease in cost does not necessarily lead to the increse in profits due to, for instance the sale amount and poor profits per goods. In short, the chain assumption cannot soundly ground the assumption in the statement. In sum, the recommendation in this memo is not well grounded and thus not persuasive. To better convince us, the president needs to provide more convincing evidence of the customer's preference and relationship between inventory and profits in the whole company. Second WORDS: 333 TIME: 00:30:00 DATE: 2008-07-02 12:15:07 In this memo the president of a chain of cheese stores recommends rebalancing the inventory between imported cheeses and domestic cheeses. To support this recommendation, the arguer cites a sale report of their newest store and a magazine survery. However, a close scrutiny shows that this recommendation is not well grounded by its evidence, and thus unconvincing. To begin with, the recommenation is based on an unwarranted assumption that there is an increasing preference for domestic cheeses, which cannot be testified by the fact that the five best-selling productions at the newest store were all domeistic. That is, the representativeness of only one new store is open to doubt for the whole sales' trend of all the stores. Further, there is more reasonable doubt for its representativeness of the for the whole cheese market through the country. Therefore, this sale report is weak to support the assumption. Secondly, the specious assumption can neither be grounded by the magazine 's survey. As mentioned, the survey is carried out only among its subscribers, which means its sample pool is constrained to a defined number of people. And if the results of the survey can reflect the preference for the total population of cheese customers is not provided. Thus, the result of the survey cannot soundly support the assumption either. Finally, even if the the assumption can be justified, the arguer unreasonablly extends it to an ungrouded causal relationship between the adjustment of inventory and improvement of profits. In fact, there is no evidence or reasoning provided in this statement to connect the inventory structure and the profits. So the unwarranted asstertion that the best way to improve profits is to restructure the inventory is dubious and hasty. To sum up, this recommendation is unconvincing due to the asssumptions which cannot be well grounded by the sale report and the survey. To better convince us, the president needs to provide more evidences about the market and the relationship between inventory and profits in the cheese company. Third Words 457 In this memo the president of a chain cheese stores argues that in order to improve profits all of their stores shoud concentrate on domestic cheeses and dock their varieties of imported cheeses. To support this argument the president points out that all five best-selling cheeses in the newest store is domestic. Additionally, the arguer also cites a magazine's survey demonstrating an increasing preference of domestic cheeses. However, this argument is unconvincing in several critical respects. To begin with, the sale situation in a single store can not lend strong support for the argument. The mere case that five best-selling mechandise at the newest store were all domesitc is vulnerable as supporting evidence, because its representativeness is open to doubt. It might be very possible that the sales in all other stores demostate the other way that imported cheeses sell better than domestic cheeses. Therefore, I would have to suspend my judgement about its credibility until the information of sales in more stores is provided. Secondly, the survey cited by the arguer can neither soundly support the argument for several reasons. First, the sample pool of the survey is a target group of Cheeses of the World's subscribers, which undermines the randomness of the survey and further its true representativeness to the actual situation. Moreover, even if the survey was well organized and its result is reliable, there is still no justification for the president to overrate domestic cheeses. Because as stated, the survey only demostrates a trend in cheeses' preference, not an absolute contrast in amount (predominance), which enables us to potray a situation ( could not rule out the possiblity ) that only the percentage for domestic cheeses increases a little bit compared to former percentage, while the total preference of imported cheeses overwhelms the domestic ones. In short, the survey cannot provide convincing evidence for the argument. Finally, the argument is weakened by the ungrounded relationship between inventory's restructure and profits' improvement. In fact, even if there is a justified conclusion that custumors begin to take priority over imported productions, the arguer still fails to explain why simply by restructuring inventory can increase in profits be promised. Other scenario can be reasonably proposed to contrast (oppose)the argument. For example, there is little profit in selling domestic cheeses,( while larger profit in selling foregn cheeses), and although sales declines, the final profits remains stable or even upsoars by increasing the variety of more profitable foreign cheeses. Thus, the argument is further weakened by lacking of relevant evidence. In sum, the argument is not persuasive as it stands. To bolster the recommendation the president would have to provide more convincing evidence(s) concerning the necessity to (reasons for) domestic productions' priority over imported productions. Moreover, the arguer must also supply enough evidence to establish a causal relationship between inventory's limitation and profits' improvement. |

In this memo the president of a chain cheese stores argues that in order to increase profit, all of their stores should concentrate on domestic cheeses and dock their varieties of imported cheeses. To support this argument the president points out that all the five best-selling cheeses in the newest store is domestic. Additionally, the arguer also cites a magazine's survey demonstrating an increasing preference of domestic cheeses. However, this argument is unconvincing from several aspects.
To begin with, the sale situation in a single store can not lend (provide) a strong support for the argument. The fact that the five best-selling cheeses at the newest store were all domestic cheeses is a very weak supporting evidence, because its representativeness is open to doubt. (I do not know what you tried to mean) It might be very possible that the sales in all other stores demonstrate the other way that imported cheeses sell better than domestic cheeses. Therefore, I would have to suspend my judgement about its credibility until the information of sales in more stores is provided. --à very good point Secondly, the survey cited by the arguer cannot support the argument as well. First, the sample pool of the survey consists of the subscribers of Cheeses of the World which undermines the randomness of the survey and further its true representativeness to the actual situation ( Rephrase it “…consists of the subscribers of Cheeses of the World which may represent a very small part of the population and hence the outcome of the survey is supposed to be biased.) Moreover, even if the survey was well organized and its result is reliable, there is still no justification for the president to overrate domestic cheeses. Because as stated, the survey only demonstrates a trend in cheeses' preference, not an absolute contrast in amount (predominance), which enables us to portray a situation ( could not rule out the possiblity ) that only the percentage for domestic cheeses increases a little bit compared to former percentage, while the total preference of imported cheeses overwhelms the domestic ones. In short, the survey cannot provide convincing evidence for the argument. Finally, the argument is weakened by the ungrounded relationship between inventory's restructure and improvement of profit. In fact, even if there is a justified conclusion that customers begin to take priority over imported productions, the arguer still fails to explain why simply by restructuring inventory can increase the profits as promised. Another scenario can be reasonably proposed to contrast (oppose)the argument. For example, may be there is little profit in selling domestic cheeses,( while larger profit in selling foreign cheeses), and although sales declines, the final profits remains stable or even uproars by increasing the variety of more profitable foreign cheeses. Thus, the argument is further weakened by lacking of relevant evidence.--> I think it’s better to eliminate this sentence. Some tips :
à Her evidences were very vulnerable and could not provide a strong support to her argument. The sentence sounds much better with the word “weak”.
à… custumors( customers) begin to take priority over imported productions
