Hey CL , i dont know if i shud ask this, but i jus wanna know ,so answer only if u dont mind, i jus wanna know the avg. remuneration for a s/w professional in us, or rather the least, because i wanna know if all this will lead to anything better, because i am already working in a nice company here in india n after a few here i ll surely get an onsite oppurunity(i.e us), and many say that instead of taking a break of 2 yrs for studies if i continue with this job i can be in a nice place, but even if i get anything equal or even slightly less after my studies i will opt for studies, because i dont wanna stay a b.tech i wanna do ms n that too in cs.

I'm not familiar with anything outside of the U.S.

Here is one statistic by a very credible source:
Quote:
Median annual earnings of computer applications software engineers who worked full time in May 2004 were about $74,980. The middle 50 percent earned between $59,130 and $92,130. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $46,520, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $113,830.

http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos267.htm
Keep in mind that most of these software developers do not have a master's degree and some do not even have a B.S. (undergrad) degree. Of course, most of these software developers have been U.S. citizens since birth, so for those seeking work permits, I would guess that is there is usually more competition for the same job.

I really can't emphasize enough that most American companies care mostly about work experience with skills that are in demand, such as .NET development in an enterprise environment, which is something that is not taught in colleges.

You can also get a good idea of what American companies are looking for by searching job sites like monster.com and indeed.com.

BTW, I'm not familiar with visas, work permits, green cards, etc. but you may find some info at the TestMagic visa forum. Because of my lack of knowledge in this area, I really don't know what is best for you.

I have just read that the UK hires more India software developers than the US, but I can't confirm that, so you may want to search Google. Also, I don't know what Indian software developers are getting paid to work in the US or the UK. For example:

UK organisations have been accused of exploiting the work permit system to import cheap IT staff from overseas.

As much as I have been saying that an M.S. degree may be overrated compared to on-the-job work experience, I just read that there is a signficant benefit for a foreign student getting an M.S. degree in the US since he/she is then more eligible for an H1B (6 year) work visa:

Quote:
If the employee you wish to employ holds a Master's Degree or higher from a United States university, he or she is eligible for one of 20,000 H1B visas set aside for people with that level of education. These are the Advance Degree Exception category, and are in addition to the 66,000 'standard' H-1B's.

H1B visa summary
Quote:
It should be noted that in addition to the 65,000 H-1B's granted each year, there are an additional 20,000 H-1B's available that are exempt from the quota. Last year, far less than half of the possible exemptions were used.

Raising H-1B cap gaining support in US government (March 2007)
BTW, regarding funding for an M.S. degree, I have read that another option is to work on-campus if one doesn't get an R.A. or T.A. position for a given semester. Though working off-campus is not allowed with a student visa (except in dire economic circumstances after getting approval from INS), working on-campus (such as a part-time IT staff member, library clerk, etc.) is permitted as part of the student visa. So this provides a backup if an R.A. or T.A. position only lasts for a few semesters.

Yes, that's what I mean. If you search indeed.com or dice.com for "H1B" you will find job descriptions that emphasize work experience and do not mention anything about having a degree:
