Hi,

I've done my GRE-general- V630, Q780 A-expecting 5.5
will be giving CS- subject test in November
have 5 yrs work ex. in which I can just show (can I?) some research!

my CGPA for 'Master of Computer Applications' at 'Thapar Institute of Engg. & Tech. Patiala(deemed univ)' = 7.78/10.00
Please tell what will be my GPA?

Also, I got 60% marks in Bachelor of Arts (Maths, Economics, Political Science). Will I have to report this GPA also (its really low) ?

But, I have 0 research experience. - maybe I'll give a paper presentation in March 04 -
can I include this future work also in my profile when applying for Fall-PHD-CS admission?

which rank univs should I aim for?
Also, how much percentage should I aim for in the subject-CS test?

Please advise urgently as I don't know where I stand?

I am a 2nd year Ph.D. student in a 50th-ranking CS department. My GRE was 710 V + 800 Q, and I had a master's degree in the U.S. before I submitted my Ph.D application. The admission to CS Ph.D. program is getting more more competitive (brutal ??). My opinion is that you should target 100th ranking programs. Nowdays, safer choice is a better choice.

Good Luck,

Plum

hi,

I m also a MCA with 78% frm UP. No need to convert to GPA. its the job of admission commitee.

forget abt ARTS dont emphasize on it, but yea u do have to send its transcript. I did BCA got 72% but have to send its transcript. I m not converting it to GPA after consulting many ppl.

GPA means how well u did relative to ur class, so if we calculate it then in many cases GPA can really distend the real percentages used in India.like in my case, i m just 1 % behind the topper.

I also dont have research experience and many dont unless ur frm IIT or IISC. research is basically done under a prof who has money to invest in it. But yes a publication idea is good.

I m also thinking abt publication of a paper. If u know how to go abt it then pls tell me also.

I dont think future work matters, but yes u can say tht u r workin on it and may release paper at a later date. but remeber if u write sumthin like this then do it actually otherwise it can prove detrimental.

I will also apply for PHD. I will apply in 4 top, 4 middle and 4 safe univs.

for subject CS, anythin above 90 percentile is good, below it may hamper chances in good univs even with gr8 percentage.

Also have u checked whether tht deemed univ thing is valid for US universities.

If u have any info to share then pls do tell it to me.

Hi,

Can you please suggest some SAFE schools then. Also, I'll give GRE again- will get atleast above 1500.

Are there any good schools which will offer PHD in CS without the ST?

I am confused about how to show research experience? I mean do you actually have to send your thesis across...or give web links?

About the paper presentation. TIET patiala is holding a National Conference & I hope to participate there in March.

Can you please tell what my GPA is otherwise- I mean I wanna know where I actually stand....!!

GPA in most schools is a strict percentage mapped to the 0 - 4 range and has no relation to your class (which is how we can have grade inflation, such as was widely reported about Harvard, and which would be impossible if GPA's were relative). They are entirely equivalent to the percentage system - just on a different scale. The only difference is that a "good" GPA from a US school may not translate directly to what is considered a "good" percentage in India - but that has to do with institutional standards, not the scoring method.
