one night 18 % of female officers on a police force were on duty. if 180 officers were on duty that night and half of these were female officers , how many female officers were on the police force ??????

90 180 270 500 1000

18% of x = 90 females on duty
=> x=90/0.18=500 females in force.

number of female officers = F
18/100*F = 90
F = 500

If you translate the first sentence, it is saying "90 females is 18% of total females" or "90 is 18% of what number?"
so let x = "total females"
x(.18) = 90
Do your hula baloo algebra to isolate x
then x = 90/.18 => x = 500!
