I was confusing it because I was taking the approach that was most natural to me, as I am quite bad at arranging equations myself.
I still don't see why the ratio won't work, but I'll just work on arranging it as a function instead.

death rate for males is not equal to 12/40 because you have got 12 by tking 30% of 40 which isn't true as you are assuming that 30% of the males have died but the question states that 30% of the died are males. got it now?
