501 Quantitative comparisons - answers (link included)

Hi,

I was trying to solve this book in one go (not a good idea) and am flummoxed by some of the solutions. Particularly, in the geometry section, problems 312, 313 seem to assume base=6, and base=7 which is nowhere in the question.

Also, in problem 315, the board could be 48''x1'' implying that no photos at all can be fitted.

Is it just me (and my addled brain) or are these errors?

Thanks, M

for 312 and 313 i`ll give u right cant imagine that the base is 6 and 7 but for 313 u can calculate the other seven easily...
but for 315 ... ive got the right solution
u have 48 on that board

and u want to stick most of the 5*(3*5) = 75 sq ...
so u can just do 3 of them =45
and u can do 2 (30) of them ... so 3 Col a is greater ... hope u`ll get my solution!!!!

Susan, The book in question is:
501 Quantitative Comparison Questions by LearningExpress, LLC (can't link, sorry).

Curly, check your pm for the link to the full book.

As for q. 315, this is what I said in the original post. Since the matting board could be a rectangle of 48 sq. in. with length 48'' and width 1'' (admittedly makes no sense) - it is possible that no photos at all can be fitted - there isn't enough information in the question. Unless you are able to cut the board.

mlkovach is on the way!
315) if you read the question again, it says

"Assume that she is cutting the board to fit each photo exactly,
with no board wasted. "

so there you go.

Hmm, I did read that, I was not satisfied because precedence means she has to be able to cut it exactly before she cuts it exactly. But I think now I am nit-picking. Thanks for your reply!

Any thoughts on the other two?
