Two challenging problems from the 10th edition! help :)

these are two problems i was not able to solve, help!

the first one:

SPOILER: answer: B

and the second problem:

A Distillate flows into an empty 64-Gallon drum at spout A and out of the drum at spout B.If the rate of flow through A is 2 gallons per hour,how many gallons per hour must flow out at spout B so that the drum is full in exactly 96 hours?:

A: 3/8
B: 1/2
C: 2/3
D: 4/3
E: 8/3

SPOILER: answer: D

bounce!

A: 3/8
B: 1/2
C: 2/3
D: 4/3
E: 8/3

At outlet A flow rate = 2 gallons/hour

in 96 hours total gallon of water through A is 96x2= 192 gallons

Let flow rate at B be y gallons /hour

in 96 hours water that flow out through B is 96y gallons

A/Q 192 - 96y = 64

Thus y= 4/3 (D)

Can you specify what is the term y in your first question?

1. in the first R-tri,
hight=sqrt(20^2-10^2)=10sqrt(3)=17.32
in the second R-tri,
hight=sqrt(20^2-12^2)= 16
so x=1.32
2. A is at 2 g/h B is x g/h
so it flows (2-x) g/h
we can get (2-x) 96=64
so x=4/3

what's y defined as in the first question?

#2. rate of B is 4/3.

let x be the rate of B.
(2-x)*96 =64
x=4/3

Ans:
Required rate= 64/96 =2/3
Rate at B = 2-2/3 = 4/3

thnx for clarifying! then i agree with B =)

On a shortcut for #1 if you dont remember sqrt(3) offhand, then just suppose x=2 which makes the original height 18...then 18^2 is 324 which exceeds 300, so x<y.

Cheers

I looked at this problem on page 362 of the General Test 10th Edition. Col A (which is "x") and Col B is supposed to be 2 not "y". Is that what you have in your book? The answer is still Col B. Thought I would mention it since "y" was not mentioned.
