reducing |x| inequality

Is it safe to rewrite the inequality |x| > |y| as x^2 > y^2 ?
Is there anywhere this can go wrong? do you see any gaps? Please let me know.

Yes, it's absolutely fine, since it's like saying x and y are positive numbers.
