Powerprep Questions

Please explain. Thank you in advance.

For the line equation y = ax+b, ab does not equal 0, the x-intercept is twice the y-intercept

Col A

Slope of the line

Col B

½

SPOILER: B

The graph of the equation y=ax+b, ab does not equal 0, has equal x-intercept and y-intercept

Col A

Slope of a graph

Col B

-1

SPOILER: C

Last edited by giddy : 07-18-2008 at 03:17 PM. Reason: For question B, the correct answer is C not A.

1) y=ax+b
the line equation is ax-y+c=0
slope of an eauation in the form of ax+by+c=0 is -(b/a)
here given that xintercept is a =2(y intercept) i.e
a=2(-1)
a=-2
therefore slope=-(-1/-2)=-1/2
hence col B is greater

2)I think answer is C
please check again as its mentioned to be B am sure about this problem

please correct if wrong

1. y = ax + b... to find the x intercept let y = 0... therefore x = -a/b... -a/b = 2b... a = -1/2... B

2. y = ax + b... to find the x intercept let y = 0... therefore x = -a/b... -a/b = b... a= -1... C

this was a nice little reminder to not be hasty in calculation...
1. a = -1/2

2. a = -1

Little confused...
i think the intercept form of a straight line equation is x/a+y/b=1...
