Speculative answer for a SC..Please Help!

    Hi all,

I came across this SC, whose stated answer was contradicting my presumed answer. Please help me out on this one.

    12. Physicists rejected the innovative experimental technique because, although it----some problems, it also produced new----. clarified.. data

    (A) eased.. interpretations
    (B) resolved.. complications
    (C) caused.. hypotheses
    (D) revealed.. inconsistencies

I presumed the answer B, but the actual answer is stated as C.

    Please Help..!

Sentence 1: i think the last few words of the sentence "clarified data" and "although" provide clues for the answer.... but i have the same doubt too....

    Sentence 2:
The word "although" here provides a contradiction...so the first blank after the comma has to be an antonym.. and the blank immediately after that should have the same meaning as the first because the second half forms a clause(sentence) by itself... its more like a cause and effect.
consider option (A).. the first word of the pair doesnt fit here as the word "although" plays a huge role in the sentence.. there has to be a word which conveys that the scientist is no longer influential... so option A can be eliminated..
Option E can be eliminated as any idea which is vague/ambiguous cannot be understood by the society and hence it cannot be familiar.
Option B: if an idea is revelutionary it certainly cannot be fundamental.. as the literal meaning of the word revolutionary is something which is innovative, new,radical... option b can be ruled out.
option D : any idea that is disputed(unclear, doubtful, dubious) clearly means that the society has made an attempt to understand the idea so the idea cannot be esoteric(cryptic, mysterious, puzzling)

So the only option left is C...
i assume this is how you arrive at the answer!!

Hi Kimchi.. Thanks for the explanation. Possible, but the second sentence does not make sense with the blanks filled..

"Although Harry Stank Sullivan is one of the most
influential social scientists of this century, his
ideas are now so commonplace in our society that they
    seem almost banal."

But the explanation seems to justify this techinically..

The second one gets cause and effect relationship. Although indicates that the first blank will be negative one and the consecutive words after the 1st blank indicate that in the 2nd blank there will be synonyms
