(c) insightful.. unappreciated

The word 'otherwise' here indicates the second blank will be something that is not still valued (unappreciated). And as Poe has critical judgment, his reviews should be insightful. So the first blank should be 'insightful'.

d) probity..guile

In face of evidence (proof), his face was imperturbable (coolness) which indicates his deliberate fraud and thus leads a situation which failed his supporter to reassure his probity. And this implies that he has a talent for guile , which the supporters could not suspect.

Thanks once again for your reply. But I havent still understand the bolded portion. He makes fraud very well and thats why the supporter cant understand his__ . Here we expect a negative word that like his bad character or fraudness nature. But probity means good or desent behavior. So how does it fit in the blank. Can you please explain the sentence more precisely?

Well for 1 here otherwise is used as 'adverb' which means 'in other respect or way'. For example, "It is a bit cold, but otherwise the days are quite pleasant"

Here, poe's insightful reviews about the contemporary fiction. And these reviews discover (find) the great work which otherwise remains literary gems.

From a leader or guider, the supporters expect uprightness or probity. Here in spite of evidence against him, he remains impassive. This means he violates the reassurance of his essential characteristic to his supporters.

Hope it will help you.

3. E
4. D

How can you obtain 3 and 4?
