Please solve this BB SC with explanation

I have the same problem with this one:
The tone of Jane Carlyle's letter is guarded, and her feelings are always ____ by the wit and pride that made____plea for sympathy impossible for her.
(A) masked.. a direct
(B) bolstered.. a needless
(C) controlled.. a circumspect
(D) enhanced.. an intentional
(E) colored.. an untimely

Could any body reason why D can't be correct.
The (Two correct answers) OA is A.

The clue for this sentence is guarded which means restrain or cautious. So there are only 2 possible answers for this masked or controlled. Circumspect is not correct one so the answer is A.

The tone of Jane Carlyle's letter is guarded, and her feelings are always ____ by the wit and pride that made____plea for sympathy impossible for her.
(A) masked.. a direct
(B) bolstered.. a needless
(C) controlled.. a circumspect
(D) enhanced.. an intentional
(E) colored.. an untimely

Please see the key words...and try to understand the meaning of the sentence...

her feelings were always ------- by the wit and pride (of her enemy) so that she can never ------- plea for sympathy impossible (since no body knows her true emotions, no body will find her worthy of getting acquitted of whatever charge...blah blah)

I hope this helps...enhanced and circumspect to not fit in the meaning..

When I first saw this questions.

I stopped at A and D choices.
Both seem to be correct for me at first instance.

The first blank Masked, nicely fits well.

At the same time, Since Wit is there so it cant be DIrect . so i left with D. so selected for D.

This one is very very trick to Decipher.

At first instance , thought A is right. Later on D made sense as well.

Since, "that " refers to Wit and Pride here. ? or the Feelings ?? is the Key.
If we think it refers to Wit and Price then it is D.
If we think it is Feelings. then A is right.

so That here refers to the---- Feelings, not the Pride and wit.

This makes any sense ?
