Because from the sentence it is clear that the two blank will be contrast of one another. The sentence state that most layer is known for rejecting the right or judgment that are given by attorney , even the layer who are known for their solemnity are also reject the right.

1. C (probably)
Since the essays are all very similar so its difficult to find their corresponding origin.

I am agree with the OA.
1. The essays gathered in the volume are characterized by ----- that ---- their disparate origins.

an incompatibility … disguises

The key of this question is "disparate", so we can guess the first blank should be opposite or concord with it, so D would be possible, and then the same blank "belies" is perferctly conneting the first blank and the "disparate" orgin.

2. That many lawyers have acquired a reputation for ….. even the most solemn and binding undertakings does not …. discovery of attorneys devoted to both legal and ethical right.

From the "even", we can guess the first blank may be negative meaning, CDE would be possible, then watch the sencond blank, because there is a "not" before this blank, so the E, "preclude" would be OK.
