Confusion

A common argument claims that in folk art, the artist's subordination of technical mastery to intense feeling _____ the direct communication of emotion to the viewer. (a) facilitates (b) averts (c) neutralize (d) implies (e) represses

In this Sc I am confused about the blank. I cant figure out whether it will be positive or negative. Can anyone explain me what subtle information enforce its substitution of positive or negative meaning?

I think it should be (a), which means the blank word should be positive.

The main keyword for this reading comprehension is artist's subordination which indicates artist's ability to subordinating (technical mastery). However, lets others' idea.

Thanks for your reply. But dont you think that sometimes too much influence or mastery to the original work could hamper the actual emotion?

I am not sure but to me
To understand a folk art, the viewer needs to have a good communication with artist's feelings and the artist who has mastery to ease this, is successful --- it can be a common argument.

I'd say this has negative meaning. Key words, according to my opinion, are "subordination" and "direct". Here "technical mastery" is something that hinders the direct communication between the artists and their viewers.

I have already shown this sc to some of my friends. They told me that since it is the case of folk arts it is by born very natural and touches person's heart so from their points of view there is a great chance of spoiling the original sense after applying the technical mastery to the folk art. At the same time I am confused why they write at the very beginning that "A common argument say that" is this represent anything that is contradictory to what everybody think?

I expect some more reply but I think the forum members are very reluctant to reply.
