No its answer is E. But my question is if you do something frequently then why will it surprise other. As for example suppose you frequent visit to some historical place when you get any vacation. Then is it obvious for us or surprising for us if we met you while we are also visiting a historical place? I think that we will not definitely be surprise after seeing you as well.

The author (in question) attacks others frequently. One day he objects about the disputes which is irrelevant and surprising.

I think this may be a explanation.

About the Q: "...scholars, his objection to disputes is only irrelevant but also----. "scholars, his objection to disputes is not only irrelevant but also----.

Thanks

Because he attacks other scholars freqently, it is logic to assume he would be an advocate of debating between different opinions. Therefore when he objects disputes, it surprises others. (people would expect him to be open enough to evaluate/consider the possibility of an alternative point of view)
