Hi all,

Here's a Sentence Equivalence question for the new GRE takers:

Notwithstanding the odds against him, he _________ the general principle very forcefully.

A. Enunciated

B. Articulated

C. Nullified

D. Refined

E. Weakened

I thought the answer was:

C, E

But the OA is:

A, B

Any thoughts on this?

Regards,

Essentially what is going on is when you withstand something you resist it. Here is says notwithstanding so it is the opposite of resisting. He is accepting the odds against him. Both enunciate and articulate have to do with stating or speaking clearly. So he is speaking forcefully towards the general principle.

Hope this clears things up a bit

Enunciated has the implication of speaking clearly as opposed to mumbling. Articulated means speaking clearly but in the sense of explaining well. You would enunciate clearly if someone was hard-of-hearing or if you were making a recording with poor-quality microphone. You would articulate clearly if you were trying to convince someone about an issue that is important to you.
