On the verge of financial collapse, the museum was granted a ..., receiving a much-needed ... of cash in the form of a government loan.

(A) reprieve..infusion
(B) deferment..inducement
(C) rebate..advance
(D) hearing..security
(E) procurement..account

The answer is (A) but after looking up the dictionary, I still don't understand it . HELP!

A reprieve is a temporary respite. You may have come across that term in the news re people whose executions are imminent getting reprieves.

If you thought fuse when you so infusion, you could've guessed the meaning. Or you may have heard of fusion as in nuclear fusion. Either way, if you knew it meant something about adding something to something else you could've guessed the answer.

Rebate, hearing or procurement does no fit the first blank. Throw C, D and E out the window.

Choice B is a bit tricky. Deferment could fit the first blank. To defer something is to put it off.

But inducement is a tad suspect in this context. The effect of an induction is internal. You can induce cash in the museum through the loan ? I guess not.

HTH

Very nice explanation, AmigoRo. I would only add that from the sentence we know that the musuem needs some help because the sentence says "On the verge of financial collapse..."

BTW, cinderalla, is this an SAT question? (I remember you're studying for the SAT.) It looks more like a GRE question. GRE questions tend to be a bit harder, so I think if you can answer them, you'll do well on the SAT.

Hi Erin, it is really a SAT question, form 10 REAL SATS. That is why I know the level of this question is 5 (from a scale form 1 to 5).

Hey, I took the test today. Wow, it was very intense, the test was long (3 hours) with only 6 minutes off. BTW, I think I did it ok. The math part was easy, and the verbal, especially the Critical Reading section was not harder than I expected. fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
