It is implied in the later part of the sentence, that a simultaneous interest in was not common in the past (refer to italics).Thus, sporadically(Recurring in scattered and irregular or unpredictable instances) and selectively both fit in the second blank. But 'abstract intuition' doesn't make much sense, so I'll go with C.
