Please explain seagull. I jus cant find the logic for perceptive although it has connection with being profound. If he is freq perceptive, you can easily believe in his profound thinking ,etc.

in the first part of the sentence, the writer has admitted that Mcmurphy has frequently shown some quality which is similar to a profound and enonomic thinker.
but, the clause "it is still hard to believe" has reversed the tone of the sentence.
so, the blank word would be something which may be a probable characteristic of a profound and economic thinker. thats why perceptive works best here. it is an expected(likely) quality for someone who is profound.

right on Seagull .By starting off with Granted that the writer is acknowledging a trait of McMurphy's rather than using it as corroborative evidence

Seems like MWM and Mauve misunderstood ever so slightly me thinks.

The sentence should have been more like

Given that McMurphy was frequently taciturn/perfunctory, it is hard to believe in him as a profound or economic thinker.

for those answers to fit
