vain : someone who is conceit.
vanity: emptiness, hollowness, or only on the surface.
The sentence is a repetition. The second part is the reverse of the first part. SO, the first blank should return "vanity", and the second blank should be used to describe "vain".
vanity -> deception
vain -> never been sincere with themselves.

logic for 1st blank: we are XXX for something just like children we take it for granted that ....

logic for 2nd blank: we are XXX for the intellects of the past,.... take it for granted that somebody must supply us with our supper and our -----------.
revert back to intellect = ideas.

Vain is to vanity ,but the second part of the sentence demands opposites. i.e. all is XXX to those who have never been XXX
arrogant cannot be proud-
cowardice cannot be afraid-
indolence cannot be bored by
solitude cannot be left to
-all of these are nonsensical.
The only option that makes sense is-
deception cannot be being sincere.
Notice the-have never been.
