look at the bold faced part,it means something that goes into the second blank has to be something like avoid,so only preclude(which means make impossible fits fine.And the first blank should be something like breaking so only (c) and (e) fit but permit does not fit so the answer is E

A) reluctant . . modified

Jus look at the bold face,so what goes into the first blank has to be something like reluctant , so only A and C remain loathe(means reluctant)
and now look into the second blank , principles can assesed hence C

It HAS to be C, KBTA.
The other options jus don't seem right.
They had assumed it was invulnerable but that was proven wrong when it crumbled under modern principles or whatever that was
