I take back what I said. "D" would be the most appropriate answer, although I could see how someone could end up choosing "C."
The clue is indeed the colon: the word "specious", which means "artificial" is used further to explain the word "artificial" in used before the colon. play was artificial = both the laughter and tears were equally specious |
