the answer is e.

choices (a),(b),(C) can be eliminated easily.

between d and e , e is correct.

to simplify the sentence, X caused them to think about the human Y.

can equivocations cause them to think about human subtelities ?
equivocation = Falsification by means of vague or ambiguous language

what is subtle about this ? nothing.

on the other hand, failures can cause them to think about human efficacy.
efficacy = Capacity or power to produce a desired effect

enjoy!!

not sure....but had it been something like theories instead of attempts..then equivocations might have been better. so i think D gets eliminated.

can attempts be equivocal?? someone plz help....
