tough one!
but l;et me eliminate the obviously wrong ones. which means B and D are out. becoz the second blank has to do sth GOOD to the theory. refuting and rebutting are not exactly 'weel meaning words' for the theory. hmm....so we;re left with A C and E |

Actually it is not as tricky as it seems. Cryptic_q did a good job in eliminating B and D. Then, the only plausible answer is E, since a "success" story can just conclude in a "successful" or "triumphal" note. Restrospective and objective do not necessarily mean "success". Wood |

The author uses the word "success" to define stories. So a successful story can finish in what kind of a note? Yes, one might argue that it can finish with an objective note... but that's not always true! You can have a very successful ending, which is hard to understand, obscure, and abstract, and therefore not at all objective! The only answer that can smoothly fit the first blank is "triumphal", which means success. Wood |

A.a retrospective..extrapolation B.an analytic.. rebuttal C.an objective..rationalization D.a positive.. refutation E.a triumphal.. ascendancy Most of the success stories in science are because of the inquiry of the researchers into the past and infering from them. |

The reason (A) is wrong is that if something has had its "final extrapolation" then there is no reason for subsequent inquiries. Best of luck. -Acri |
