There is hardly a generalization that can be made about people's social b
ehavior and the values informing it that cannot be_____ from one or another point of view, or even ___ as simplistic or vapid. accepted..praised intuited..exposed harangued..retracted defended..glorified challenged..dismissed(key) Could you please explain this sentence to me? Could you tell me its structure? what does 'informing it that' mean, in which couldy you tell me 'it' refersto what, 'that' refers to what? |

Here's my shot at it:
Regarding sentence structure. First idea: 1) ... a generalization that can be ... 2) ... the values informing it that cannot be ... The "it" on the second sentence refers to "social behavior". He's talking about the values that inform us about people's social behavior... and that these two are hard to generalize. So the first blank should be something as "defended", "challenged". The second blank must be sth negative, since the generalization and values are "not taken into consideration", or "dismissed", "retracted". So the only choice that fits both blanks is E. |

Cathyding, the second that refers to "the values informing it", which is a noun similar to "a generalization". The structure is "There is hardly [something] that can/cannot be ...". I'm not good at breaking the sentence into grammar structures. You might get some help from the TOEFL gurus. Wood |
