well, u see the second part of both d and e fit the second blank correctly. but if u see the first blank impugn means to attack and obscure means to be not clear.

so if u fit the meaning to the sentence, d seems best.[8)]do you get me?

means though their characters might not be that good but their work is really good; inspite of their characters being bad.
