It is a clear B. The fact that it was "welcomed" implies it was being introduced. The "though" implies that the private firms did something which was other than altering the clock which would be contrary in intent if "adopted" were chosen.

The hint is welcomed daylight savings so for the first blank both B and E fits but for the second blank only B fits as they are planning daylight saving so they will stop working 1 hour earlier.
Actually the work can also start one hour earlier in the morning and still wont have any change in the clock.
Well pray we dont get such question.
I agree with sritismail's explanation, since by commencing will not necessarliy contribute in daylight savings..and there is no doubt that the clue words are"welcomed daylight savings"

This is a really tricky question.

I picked E and believe that it is right.

They are still observing daylight savings time even if they don't change the clock. So, they are in essence "adopting" it.

Daylight Savings time could be spring ahead or fall back. It seems like it's spring ahead.

Working hours on clock set to DST: 9 am to 5 pm
Working hours on clock not set to DST: 8 am to 4 pm (they'll now start earlier, which mean they will finish earlier)

That's my two cents.

Choice 'E' seems most appropriate.

Since daylight savings were 'welcomed' by corporations, it would be 'adopted' by firms. In addition commencing an hour earlier is better than terminating an hour earlier. It would not be very wise of corporations/firms to terminate work an hour earlier, it would not be good for business.

Very interesting point. If you saw what I said above, I was thinking on these lines to some degree.

Also, "anticipate" does not sound right to my native English ears here. Anticipate means to "expect/getting ready for" You'd anticipate the DST by doing something in preparation for it. Here, it doesn't sound right.

I think E is by far the best answer, even though I think it sounds a little funny, too.

B does seem more appropriate after thinking about it a little. E is incorrect because "adopt" does imply conformity to turning the clock. But they did not in fact do that. so id go with B.

this is a tough question though.

They are in essence "adopting" it, but not formally. They're keeping the clocks at the same time, but leaving work an hour earlier (and most likely starting work an hour earlier two). Even though the clock is not being reset, they're still following the DLS. You have to as it's the law. You have not choice to but to follow it.

Even if you chose a E as I did, it still doesn't sound well when read aloud. B doesn't make sense to me at all because of the word "anticipate." It just doesn't sound right here. If they would have said "anticipate DLS by telling their employees that they won't be changing the clocks...", then I could see it being used.

This question should be thrown out.
