try this plz.
Not even the most ________ remark from the gathering manage to ________ him, and he continued with his speech with the same fervor.
(A) contiguous – scatter (B) startling – disparage (C) damaging – confute (D) sanctimonious – enervate (E) acerbic – discomfit. either its D or E. which one it should be and why.? |

I think it should be --> B
I think it should be --> B, because Disparage-->"To reduce in esteem or rank". Since he continue his speech with same energy hence he was not disparaged by even the startling comment from the crowd.

Ans is E. Here the clue word is " he continued with the same fervor" and in the beginning there is "Not" , that indicates the second blank should have something opposite to Fervor..there are two words that have opposite meaning i.e, Enervate and fervor , but if we check for the first blank, sanctimonious(holy)remarks does not enervate somebody's passion . The only word fits here is Acerbic ,because such remarks can cause embarrasment.
